Mendez Set to Defend NCAA Title Saturday

Junior at 141 defeats Beau Bartlett of Penn State to reach 2025 title match
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jesse Mendez will defend his 2024 National Title Saturday after reaching the 2025 title match with a win over No. 2-seed Beau Bartlett in the semifinals of the 2025 NCAA Championships Friday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Mendez, the No. 3 seed at 141 in the championships this year, defeated Bartlett for the 2024 national title. The two faced each other three times already this year before traveling to Philadelphia. Bartlett earned wins in the last two meetings before the loss (2-1, TB-2) Friday.
In the morning session Friday, a pair of Buckeyes earned All-America honors with quarterfinal victories while four others advanced to the blood round with All-America accolades on the line.
Mendez and Dylan D'Emilio advanced to the semifinals while Nic Bouzakis, Brandon Cannon, Seth Shumate and Nick Feldman earned spots in Round 4 of the consolation bracket in their respective weight classes where a win secures a spot on the podium and All-America status as a Top 8 finisher.
Bouzakis, Cannon, Shumate and Feldman fell in their bids to reach All-America status.
Ohio State heads to the final day of competition Saturday in eighth place with 44 points.

No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (133) faced No. 13 Tyler Knox of Stanford in the blood round. Bouzakis earned a takedown in under a minute of action but the call was challenged and reversed. The opening period ended with no score. From bottom to open the second, Bouzakis was not able to earn an escape while Knox built nearly two minutes of riding time. Knox earned a point for an escape early in the third and then a takedown for a 4-0 lead. With a point for riding time, Knox got the win by decision, 5-0.
No. 3 Jesse Mendez (141) renewed the rivalry with No. 2 Beau Bartlett of Penn State in the semifinals. Bartlett won both meetings prior to the NCAA championships this year. Mendez will take on No. 1 seed Brock Hardy of Nebraska for the national championship Saturday night.
No. 13 Dylan D'Emilio (149) battled No. 1 Caleb Henson of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. After a scoreless first period, D'Emilio struck first with a reversal early in the second to lead 2-1 after a Henson escape. That score held after five minutes. Henson tied the match 2-all with an early escape in the final period. Henson went up 5-2 with a takedown in opening minute of the third and held on for the win by decision, 6-2 with a point for riding time. D'Emilio will wrestle in the consolation bracket with a chance to finish as high as third Saturday.
No. 5 Brandon Cannon (157) clashed with No. 7 Vinny Zerban of Northern Colorado in the blood round. Cannon trailed 5-2 after the first period. He trailed 7-6 after five minutes but Zerban earned an escape and takedown in the third to win by decision, 11-6.
No. 23 Seth Shumate (197) and No. 12 Steven Little of Little Rock met in the blood round. Little got the first score with a takedown late in the opening period. Little added another takedown and was awarded a point for stalling for a 7-0 lead. He then got an additional four points on a nearfall to lead 11-0 after five minutes. Little added a takedown in the third on the way to a 15-0 win by technical fall.
No. 12 Nick Feldman (OSU) and No. 7 Isaac Trumble of North Carolina State clashed in the blood round. Trumble earned an escape and takedown for a 4-0 lead after a scoreless first period. Feldman got a takedown in the third to make it 4-3 Little. An escape made it 5-3 Little for a win by decision.
Session Ill
No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (133) faced No. 2 Drake Ayala of Iowa in the first quarterfinal match for the Buckeyes. Ayala struck first with a pair of takedowns to lead 6-2 after a minute of action. A Bouzakis takedown cut the lead to 9-6 Iowa. The bout went to the second period with Ayala leading 10-6. Ayala added a quick escape and takedown for a 14-6 lead. Iowa took a 17-7 lead to the third period. Ayala finished off the match with a win by major decision, 23-10.
No. 3 Jesse Mendez (141) squared off against No. 6 Vance VomBaur of Minnesota in a quarterfinal match. The pair met during the regular season in Columbus with Mendez earning a 6-5 win after overtime and two rounds of tiebreakers.
On Friday, Mendez struck first with a takedown in less than a minute of action. Mendez added another takedown with just over a minute remaining in the opening period and led 9-2 going to the second. Mendez added an escape point quickly to open the middle period. He added another takedown to lead 13-3 after five minutes. Mendez maintained his edge in the third to win 17-5 by major decision.
Mendez secured a spot in the semifinals to become a three-time All-American. Ohio State now has 132 All-Americans in program history. Mendez is the 21st athlete in Ohio State history to earn All-America status three times in Columbus.
No. 13 Dylan D'Emilio (149) clashed with No. 12 Ethan Stiles of Oregon State. D'Emilio got on the board with two quick takedowns to lead 6-2 after the opening three minutes. Stiles added an escape point to start the second for the only scoring in the period. D'Emilio escaped to open the third to up the lead to 7-3. That's where it ended for the D'Emilio win by decision to send him to the semifinals and secure his second career All-America honor. He is the 33rd Buckeye to earn two or more All-America honors.
No. 23 Seth Shumate (197) matched up with No. 2 Stephen Buchanan of Iowa in the final quarterfinal battle of the day for the Buckeyes. Shumate got a quick takedown at the edge of the mat for a 3-0 lead but the takedown was challenged and reversed. Shumate then got a takedown with under a minute left in the opening period to lead 3-1 after three minutes. Buchanan evened the score with a reversal and then went up 7-3 with a four-point nearfall. Buchanan added a takedown and another four-point nearfall in the third and went on to win by technical fall, 18-3. Shumate drops to the consolation bracket.
No. 20 Brendan McCrone (125) got things going for the Buckeyes Friday in the consolation bracket against No. 14 Spencer Moore of North Carolina. Moore scored first with a takedown and led 3-1 after a McCrone escape after the first period. From bottom, Moore escaped late for a 4-1 lead going to the third. That's where the scoring ended for a UNC win by decision, 4-1.
No. 5 Brandon Cannon (157) tangled with No. 22 Ed Scott of North Carolina State in the consolation bracket. Cannon scored first in the second period with a quick reversal for a 2-1 lead after a Scott escape. The bout was tied at 2-all after a Scott escape in the third but Cannon took the lead with two takedowns to take the match by decision 8-3 to advance.
Cannon then met No. 19 Cobe Siebrecht of South Dakota State. Cannon quickly scored a takedown for a 3-0 lead. He added a nearfall for two points for a 5-1 lead. The advantage grew to 11-3 Cannon going to the second. Cannon escaped to start the second to lead 12-3 after five minutes. Siebrecht added an escape in the 14-7 win by decision for the Buckeyes.
No. 12 Nick Feldman (HWT) took on No. 11 Jimmy Mullen of Virginia Tech in the consolation bracket. Mullen was awarded a point for an illegal hold. Feldman got a late takedown in the first for a 3-1 lead after three minutes. Feldman added a takedown late in the second for a 6-1 lead. He added a quick escape in the third and then another takedown for a 10-1 advantage. With a point for stalling and another for riding time, Feldman advanced with a 12-1 win by major decision.
Feldman was quickly back on the mat against No. 13 Seth Nevells of Maryland. There was no score in the opening period. After a Nevells escape, Feldman got a takedown and three-point nearfall for a 6-1 lead. Nevills escaped again to go to the third down 9-2 after a late Feldman takedown. Nevells added a takedown but Feldman countered with a pin late in the third (6:57) to advance.
Ohio State was sixth after the third session with a total of 37.0 points.
Session Il
No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (133) earned his second win of the day with a 9-4 win by decision over No. 23 Sean Spidle of Central Michigan to advance to the round of eight in the championship bracket.
No. 3 seed Jesse Mendez (141) faced No. 14 Sergio Lemley of Michigan in the second round of the day. Mendez knocked off the Wolverine for the second time this season with an 11-2 win by major decision. Mendez will wrestle in the round of eight on the championship side of the bracket Friday.
No. 13 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) also advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win by decision over No. 29 Jack Gioffre of Virginia for his second win of the day. Earlier, D'Emilio earned career win No. 100 with a 5-1 win over No. 20 Koy Buesgens of N.C. State in the first round.
No. 5 Brandon Cannon (157) battled to overtime in his second-round match with No. 12 Caleb Fisk of Oklahoma State but fell 10-7. Cannon was awarded a reversal and then two-point nearfall in the third period for a 9-6 lead but had the nearfall points removed after review. Fisk then tied the match at 7-all to send it to overtime.
No. 23 Seth Shumate (197) continued his run to the quarterfinals with an 11-6 win by decision over No. 26 Brock Zurawaki of Rider. He scored the upset of the day for the Buckeyes in the first round with a pin against No. 10 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota.
No. 12 Nick Feldman (HWT) dropped his second-round match to No. 5 Ben Kueter of Iowa by decision, 8-2. Feldman will battle for a chance for third in the consolation bracket.
No. 20 Brendan McCrone (125) remained alive in the consolation bracket with a 12-4 major decision win over No. 29 Joey Cruz of Iowa. McCrone defeated Cruz to qualify for the NCAA championships at the Big Ten tournament earlier this month.
In the consolation bracket, No. 26 Paddy Gallagher (165) took No. 23 Thomas Snipes of the Citadel to overtime after a 1-all tied in regulation. There was no score in the first overtime sending the bout to tiebreakers. Gallagher went up 2-1 with a quick escape. Snipes tied it at 2-all in TB-2 and won with credit for riding time.
No. 9 Carson Kharchla (174) also went to overtime in the consolation bracket with No. 8 Lenny Pinto of Nebraska after the match was tied at 7-all in regulation. Pinto then got the winning takedown with two back points in the extra period for a 12-7 win by decision.
No. 26 Ryder Rogotzke (184) dropped his consolation match to No. 23 Aiden Brenot of North Dakota State by decision, 13-7.
Session I
Seth Shumate highlighted the opening session of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships for the Buckeyes with an upset in the 197-pound bracket. As the No. 23 seed, Shumate earned a pin over No. 10 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota in the second period (4:12).
Earlier, at 133, No. 7 Nic Bouzakis earned Ohio State's first win of the championships with a pin against No. 26 Kai Orine of North Carolina State at 2:12 of the opening period.
Ohio State also got wins from defending national champion Jesse Mendez at 141, graduate senior Dylan D'Emilio (149), redshirt freshman Brandon Cannon (157) and heavyweight Nick Feldman (HWT).
The Buckeyes were tied with Nebraska in the team standings in the No. 4 spot with 11. 5 points after Session I.

He added a quick escape in the third and then another takedown for a 10-1 advantage. With a point for stalling and another for riding time, Feldman advanced with a 12-1 win by major decision.
Feldman was quickly back on the mat against No. 13 Seth Nevells of Maryland. There was no score in the opening period. After a Nevells escape, Feldman got a takedown and three-point nearfall for a 6-1 lead. Nevills escaped again to go to the third down 9-2 after a late Feldman takedown. Nevells added a takedown but Feldman countered with a pin late in the third (6:57) to advance.
Ohio State was sixth after the third session with a total of 37.0 points.
Session Il
No. 7 Nic Bouzakis (133) earned his second win of the day with a 9-4 win by decision over No. 23 Sean Spidle of Central Michigan to advance to the round of eight in the championship bracket.
No. 3 seed Jesse Mendez (141) faced No. 14 Sergio Lemley of Michigan in the second round of the day. Mendez knocked off the Wolverine for the second time this season with an 11-2 win by major decision. Mendez will wrestle in the round of eight on the championship side of the bracket Friday.
No. 13 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) also advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win by decision over No. 29 Jack Gioffre of Virginia for his second win of the day. Earlier, D'Emilio earned career win No. 100 with a 5-1 win over No. 20 Koy Buesgens of N.C. State in the first round.
No. 5 Brandon Cannon (157) battled to overtime in his second-round match with No. 12 Caleb Fisk of Oklahoma State but fell 10-7. Cannon was awarded a reversal and then two-point nearfall in the third period for a 9-6 lead but had the nearfall points removed after review. Fisk then tied the match at 7-all to send it to overtime.
No. 23 Seth Shumate (197) continued his run to the quarterfinals with an 11-6 win by decision over No. 26 Brock Zurawaki of Rider. He scored the upset of the day for the Buckeyes in the first round with a pin against No. 10 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota.
No. 12 Nick Feldman (HWT) dropped his second-round match to No. 5 Ben Kueter of Iowa by decision, 8-2. Feldman will battle for a chance for third in the consolation bracket.
No. 20 Brendan McCrone (125) remained alive in the consolation bracket with a 12-4 major decision win over No. 29 Joey Cruz of Iowa. McCrone defeated Cruz to qualify for the NCAA championships at the Big Ten tournament earlier this month.
In the consolation bracket, No. 26 Paddy Gallagher (165) took No. 23 Thomas Snipes of the Citadel to overtime after a 1-all tied in regulation. There was no score in the first overtime sending the bout to tiebreakers. Gallagher went up 2-1 with a quick escape. Snipes tied it at 2-all in TB-2 and won with credit for riding time.
No. 9 Carson Kharchla (174) also went to overtime in the consolation bracket with No. 8 Lenny Pinto of Nebraska after the match was tied at 7-all in regulation. Pinto then got the winning takedown with two back points in the extra period for a 12-7 win by decision.
No. 26 Ryder Rogotzke (184) dropped his consolation match to No. 23 Aiden Brenot of North Dakota State by decision, 13-7.
Session I
Seth Shumate highlighted the opening session of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships for the Buckeyes with an upset in the 197-pound bracket. As the No. 23 seed, Shumate earned a pin over No. 10 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota in the second period (4:12).
Earlier, at 133, No. 7 Nic Bouzakis earned Ohio State's first win of the championships with a pin against No. 26 Kai Orine of North Carolina State at 2:12 of the opening period.
Ohio State also got wins from defending national champion Jesse Mendez at 141, graduate senior Dylan D'Emilio (149), redshirt freshman Brandon Cannon (157) and heavyweight Nick Feldman (HWT).
The Buckeyes were tied with Nebraska in the team standings in the No. 4 spot with 11. 5 points after Session I.
