In the medal round earlier in the day, graduate Dylan D'Emilio finished fourth overall in the 149-pound bracket after beating Lachlan McNeil of North Carolina in the consolation semifinals and falling in the third-place match to Shayne Van Ness of Penn State. It was the highest finish at the national tournament for D'Emilio, who took eighth at the 2023 event.
Tom Ryan, head coach of the Buckeyes, has coached 75 All-Americans over his 19 seasons in Columbus. He has coached 14 All-Americans at the 141-pound weight class.
Mendez is the 14th individual national champion coached by Ryan at Ohio State.

Ohio State finished tied for the No. 5 spot in the team standings with 51.5 points.
Session V (Medal Round)
Mendez and Hardy met in the 2024 Big Ten Championships with the Husker coming away with a 9-8 win.
In the national title match, Hardy scored first with a takedown and two-point nearfall for a 5-1 lead after a Mendez escape. Mendez then earned a takedown to make it 5-4 at the end of the first. Hardy escaped to open the second before another Mendez takedown put the Buckeye in the lead, 7-6. Mendez added a four-point near fall to lead 11-6 after two periods. Mendez chose the neutral position to start the third. Hardy added a takedown but it was not enough. With a point for riding time, Mendez won the 2025 National Championship with a 12-9 win by decision.
No. 13 Dylan D'Emilio (149) started the medal round in the consolation semifinals against No. 6 Lachlan McNeil of North Carolina in the morning session.
D'Emilio, a two-time All-American, and McNeil went to the second period scoreless. McNeil opened the middle period down and earned an escape point for a 1-0 lead. D'Emilio countered with a takedown and two-point nearfall for a 5-1 advantage. D'Emilio, with over a minute of riding time, added an escape point early in the third to lead 6-1. With a point for riding time, D'Emilio got the 7-1 win by decision to advance to the third-place match. The win guaranteed his best finish at the national tournament. He finished eighth in 2013 to earn his first All-America honor.
Against No. 3 Shayen Van Ness of Penn State in the battle for third, Van Ness got the early takedown for a 3-1 lead after a D'Emilio escape. D'Emilio added a pair of escapes around two Van Ness takedowns before before the Nittany Lion earned two nearfall points for an 11-3 lead after five minutes. Van Ness took third with a 15-4 win by major decision.
