Buckeyes use a seven-run second inning to improve to 13-4-1 on the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State used a familiar formula to register one of its most impressive wins of the young season, riding a seven-run second inning and the arm of freshman pitcher Lorin Boutte to a 7-0 shutout of No. 10 Georgia on Sunday in Athens, Ga.
The Buckeyes, who won four of five games this weekend at the Bulldog Classic, are 13-4-1 on the season while Georgia falls to 18-2. Ohio State's offense was powered by home runs off the bat of Jasmyn Burns and Hadley Parisien and Boutte's outing in the circle, which included five strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
The win was the Buckeyes' first over a top-10 opponent on the road since they blanked No. 9 Kentucky, 3-0, on March 29, 2022.
The Short Story
Ohio State's big second inning on offense started with a solo home run by Burns, who hit .643 on the weekend with two home runs and five doubles. Four batters later, Parisien connected on a 1-0 pitch down the right field line with Skylar Limon on base to increase Ohio State's lead to 3-0.
A bases-loaded double that plated three runs from Kaitlyn Farley made the score 6-0 in Ohio State's favor and Burns drove in her second run of the inning with an RBI double just one batter later. When the inning was finished, Ohio State had six hits and scored seven runs.
That run support proved to be more than enough for Boutte, who did not allow her first hit until the third inning. Georgia had a runner in scoring position just once in the game – in the third inning – and the rally was ended as Boutte retired three consecutive batters on a pop up, fielder's choice and ground out.
