COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State faithufl packed Buckeye Field on Monday afternoon in a much-anticipated matchup between two of the hottest teams in softball. Ohio State, unfortunately, lost in a hard-fought battle to No. 1-ranked Texas, 4-2.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak but despite the setback Ohio State is now 17-5-1 on the season and will return to action tomorrow against Notre Dame. Texas, the national runners-up last season, is 26-1.
How It Happened
- The Longhorns went ahead early with a two-run home run off the bat of Mia Scott on the fourth pitch of the game.
- An Ashton Maloney RBI double increased the Texas lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning.
- Scott struck again in the top of the fourth with two runners on, knocking through an RBI single, but a rundown out facilitated by Jasmyn Burns and Sami Bewick contained the damage.
- After threatening all game, Jasmyn Burns put the Buckeyes on the board with one swing of the bat, blasting a two-run home run that scored Kaitlyn Farley. It was Burns' ninth home run of the season and her 26th RBI.
- Over this weekend's games – two against Oakland, one vs. Kent State, one vs. Merrimack and today against Texas – Burns is batting .615 with six extra base hits and seven RBI. Her homer was the 47th this season by Ohio State.
- The Buckeyes also extended their streak to 15 consecutive games with at least one home run.
- Despite the loss, Ohio State had at least one runner on in six of the seven innings. Eight total Buckeyes were left on base in the contest.
- Freshman Lorin Boutté started the went four innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out two. She was relieved in the fifth inning by Kennedy Kay, who kept the Buckeyes in reach, giving up zero hits, while striking out three through three innings pitched.
- Teagan Kavan got the win for Texas, going 6.1 innings with 11 strikeouts and recording her ninth win this season.
A Packed House
A sellout crowd of 1,378 was the largest of the season so far and was aided by a warm, sunny day in central Ohio. Tomorrow's forecast looks even better, as temperatures are expected to climb into the mid 60s with more sunshine.
