Lorin Boutte and Layna Gerhard combine to strike out 12 batters
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State increased its season-opening winning streak to three consecutive games on Saturday, as the Buckeyes outlasted Elon, 4-3, at Hunt Softball Park on the campus of Elon University.
The Short Story
The Buckeyes fell behind 3-1 in the first inning but steadily fought back, putting up two runs in the top of the third inning to knot the score at 3-all. Run scoring hits in that rally came off the bat of Sami Bewick (a sacrifice fly) and Reagan Milliken (a two-out RBI single).
Kami Kortokrax's one-out single in the top of the fourth inning scored Morgan Frye, who got on base via a hit by pitch earlier in the inning. From there, the Ohio State pitchers and defense made the one-run lead stand up. A pair of freshmen teamed up in the circle, as Layna Gerhard started the game and went 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Lorin Boutte then came in relief, going 3.1 innings and registering five strikeouts, including the game-ending K with a runner at first base.
Kortokrax finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while Jasmyn Burns also had two hits and reached base in three of her four plate appearances.
