Jasmyn Burns’ two-run home run proved to be all the offense the Buckeyes would need
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A pair of freshman pitchers combined to limit UConn to just three hits and sophomore Jasmyn Burns' two-run home run was enough offense for Ohio State, which finished its opening weekend with a 4-0 record thanks to a 3-1 triumph against UConn on Sunday on the campus of Elon University.
How It Happened
Kasandra Gewecke started on Sunday and pitched three scoreless innings before fellow freshman Lorin Boutte finished the next four innings while allowing just one unearned run. Boutte struck out seven batters and surrendered just one hit.
Burns hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning – her second long ball of the weekend – and overall finished the day 2-for-3. Kami Kortokrax, who doubled in her first at-bat of the day prior to Burns' home run, scored two runs. The Buckeyes' third run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kortokrax came home following a throwing error by UConn's third baseman.
The Huskies' best scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when they had runners on first and second base with nobody out. Boutte, however, struck out two of the next three batters to end the threat.
