Ohio State won both games 5-1 to improve to 18-8 2 on the year
COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second night in a row, the No. 9/11 Ohio State men's hockey team allowed the first goal but closed out the game with five straight tallies en route to a 5-1 victory over Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The Buckeyes were 4-0-0 vs. the Irish in the regular season.

Ohio State is now 18-8-2 overall and has an 11-6-1 2-2-0 Big Ten ledger, with the Irish 9-18-1 (3-14-1 2-2-1 B1G). Â

The Short Story
Notre Dame opened the scoring near the midpoint of the first but a Buckeye power play goal with 1:11 left from Gunnarwolfe Fontaine sent the teams into the intermission tied at 1. Ohio State scored twice in both the second and the third for the victory. Sam Deckhut's breakaway goal broke the tie at 9:37 and Davis Burnside put the Buckeyes up 3-1 at 17:31. Two Buckeye defensemen – Nathan McBrayer and William Smith – tallied in the third for the 5-1 final.

Burnside led the Buckeyes with three points on a goal and two assists and Fontaine had a two-point night with a goal and a helper. Buckeye goalie Logan Terness had 41 saves while playing all 60 minutes and the Buckeye penalty kill was 3-for-3 in the win.

- Notre Dame opened the scoring on a goal from Danny Nelson from the high slot at 10:10.
- A Buckeye power play goal deadlocked the score late in the first, as Gunnarwolfe Fontaine's shot went off an Irish defender and in at 18:49. Damien Carfagna and Davis Burnside assisted on the goal, Fontaine's team-best seventh power play tally of the season.
- Shots were 19-13 in favor of Notre Dame in the opening period, with seven on an Irish power play.
- In the second, Sam Deckhut scored the go-ahead goal on a breakaway at 9:37 after forcing a turnover inside the Buckeye zone. His shot was initially called no-goal, but after review, the goal was awarded but he was also called for a charging the goalie penalty (which occurred after the puck crossed the goal line). The Buckeyes killed off the ensuing power play.
- The teams combined for 26 shots in the second, with the Irish ahead, 14-12.
- At 17:31 Chris Able set up a Davis Burnside one-timer in the slot for a 3-1 Buckeye lead. Fontaine also assisted on the goal, Burnside's 10th of the year.
- In the third, blueliner Nathan McBrayer's blast from the point went bar-down and in at 9:04, set up by James Hong.
- Defenseman William Smith skated down low and Burnside found him for a redirect at the far post at 11:02. Jake Rozzi had the second helper.
- Shots were 9-5 in the third and ended with the Irish ahead for the game, 42-30.
- Buckeye goalie Logan Terness played all 60 minutes and had 41 saves. Nicholas Kempf made 25 stops in 60 minutes for Notre Dame.
- Forward Patrick Guzzo had three of the Buckeyes' 10 shot blocks.
- Ohio State was 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the win.
- Burnside led the Buckeyes with five points, on two goals and three assists, in the series. Saturday was his second career three-point night and first since Nov. 2 vs. Lake Superior State. It was his fourth career two-assist game and his second of the year. He is second on the team with 26 points this season, with 10 goals and 16 assists.
- Terness was 2-0-0 in the Buckeye net in the series, with a 1.00 goals-against average and .971 save percentage, giving up two goals (one in each game) and making 68 saves. Saturday was his fifth collegiate game with 40+ saves and his first of the season.
- Fontaine has a team-best 29 points and shares the goal scoring lead with 13. He has eight multiple-point games this season.
- Ohio State is allowing 2.32 goals a game this year, scoring 3.32 a contest.
- McBrayer was a career-best +4 in the win. He now has four goals and 15 points on the year.
- The 42 shots by Notre Dame were a Buckeye opponent season high.
