Logan Terness made 37 saves in the Ohio State net
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind two goals from Riley Thompson and 37 saves from Logan Terness, the No. 8 Ohio State men's hockey team topped visiting Wisconsin, 4-1, Friday in Value City Arena. Wisconsin scored first, but Ohio State tallied twice in the second and the third for the victory.
The Buckeyes are now 19-8-2 overall, with a 12-6-1 2-2-0 Big Ten ledger. Wisconsin is 11-17-3 (6-14-1 1-7-0 B1G).
The Short Story
Wisconsin scored the only goal of the first period. Damien Carfagna set up two Buckeye goals late in the second – from Riley Thompson at 15:36 and Joe Dunlap at 19:29 – for a 2-1 Ohio State lead through 40 minutes. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine put the Buckeyes up 3-1 at 1:40 of the third and Thompson sealed the win with an empty net goal with nine seconds left. Goalie Logan Terness made 37 saves in the Buckeye net.

- For the third game in a row, Ohio State gave up the first goal of the game. Jack Horbach's shot got through a screen and in at 17:10 of the first for a 1-0 Wisconsin lead.
- The Badgers carried their lead until less than five minutes remaining in the second.
- Ohio State had a five-minute major power play at 5:19 of the second, but was unable to convert the opportunity.
- At 15:36 a Damien Carfagna shot deflected off Riley Thompson and in to tie the game at one. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine picked up the second assist.
- With the teams skating 4x4 late in the stanza, Carfagna took a pass from Nathan McBrayer and skated into the Badger zone and behind the net. His wraparound was saved but Joe Dunlap was able to beat his defender and put the rebound home at 19:29 for a 2-1 Ohio State lead.
- The Badgers outshot the Buckeyes 9-6 in the first period and 14-6 in the second.
- In the third and with the teams again 4x4, Fontaine scored from the high slot for a 3-1 Ohio State lead. Chris Able and Davis Burnside assisted on the goal.
- With more than five minutes left, Wisconsin pulled its goalie for the extra attacker.
- With four saves from goalie Logan Terness and four shot blocks, the Buckeyes were able to hold the Badgers off the board.
- Thompson sealed the win with an empty net goal at 19:51, scored from just inside the Buckeye blue line as he was falling. Aiden Hansen-Bukata assisted on the tally.
- In the third, Terness stopped all 15 UW shots on goal, including four on a power play chance. Ohio State had nine shots in the final period.
- For the game, the Badgers outshot the Buckeyes, 38-21. Terness played all 60 minutes and had 37 saves. UW starter Anton Castro had 11 saves on 14 shots in 42:10. Tommy Scarfone played in relief and stopped the six shots he faced in 12:55.
- Carfagna led the Buckeyes with three shot blocks and Ohio State had nine as a team. The Badgers blocked 14 Ohio State shot attempts.
- Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play.
- Thompson leads the Buckeyes with 16 goals and is second with 28 points. He had his sixth career two-goal game and his fourth of the season.
- Fontaine has a team-best 31 points, ranking second with 13 goals and 18 assists. With a goal and an assist, it was his 10th multiple-point game of the season.
- Carfagna had his fifth career two-assist night and his third of the year. He has 16 assists and 21 points this season and is on a four-game assist and point streak.
- Hansen-Bukata's assist was his team-best 20th of the year and he now has 21 points. He has 99 points in his collegiate career, with 10 goals and 89 assists.
- Burnside is on a three-game point streak and has a career-high tying 26 points overall, with 10 goals and 16 assists.
- Terness allowed one goal for the third game in a row. He has a 2.15 goals-against average and .928 save percentage this year.
- As a team, Ohio State is allowing 2.32 goals a game this year, scoring 3.34 a contest.
