Ohio State scored game’s final five goals
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/11 Ohio State men's hockey team scored twice late in both the second and third periods en route to a 5-1 win at Notre Dame Friday in South Bend, Ind. Buckeye sophomore Ryan Gordon scored twice in the victory, which also saw Ohio State equipment manager Tim Adams work his 1,000th NCAA hockey game.

Ohio State improves to 17-8-2 overall, with a 10-6-1 2-2-0 Big Ten ledger. The Buckeyes and Irish (9-17-1, 3-13-1 2-2-1 B1G) will close the weekend and regular season series at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. The game will be streamed through Peacock and can be heard on Ohio State Radio (online and on the Ohio State Buckeyes app). Â

The Irish scored first, converting their first power play chance at 17:31 of the first period. Ohio State answered less than a minute later on a Davis Burnside goal for a 1-1 game through 20 minutes. The Buckeyes' Ryan Gordon broke the deadlock at 16:42 of the second and Riley Thompson put Ohio State up 3-1 just 2:02 later. The Buckeye penalty kill was 4-for-4 in the third, including nearly a minute of 5x3 play. In the final minute, Patrick Guzzo scored into the empty net and Gordon tallied his second of the game for the 5-1 final.

How it Happened
- The Irish opened the scoring at 17:31 of the first with a power play goal. After an ND faceoff win, the puck went down low and Cole Knuble found Blake Biondi in front.
- Ohio State tied the game at 18:19. Riley Thompson sent the puck up ice and Damien Carfagna gathered it along the boards in the Irish zone. Carfagna found Davis Burnside alone in the high slot and he scored.
- The teams combined for 23 shots in the first, with the home team ahead, 13-10. The Irish had the only power play in the stanza.
- There were no goals in the second until Ohio State scored twice in the final 3:18.
- On the go-ahead goal, Sam Deckhut led Ryan Gordon into the zone. His initial shot was saved, but he was able to corral the rebound with his foot and put it home for a 2-1 Buckeye lead at 16:42. Theo Wallberg picked up the second assist on the tally.
- A shot from Nathan McBrayer went off Thompson in front and in for a 3-1 Buckeye advantage at 18:44.
- Ohio State had the shot advantage, 10-7, in the middle period and there were no penalties called.
- The Buckeye penalty kill came up big to maintain the Buckeye two-goal lead, as it killed off two Irish chances, including 54 seconds of 5x3, early in the third. The PK killed off another Irish chance with 5:15 left in regulation and a final shortened chance in the last three minutes.
- The Irish pulled their goalie with about 90 seconds left in the game and the teams skated 4x4.
- Patrick Guzzo put the Buckeyes up 4-1 at 19:09, with his shot from the faceoff dot in the Buckeye zone finding the back of the net.
- A final Buckeye goal sealed the win at 19:34. With the teams skating teams 4x4, Wallberg found Gordon near the post and with his stick between his legs, he redirected the puck into the net with perfect timing and the goalie unable to recover.
- Ohio State had the shot advantage in the third, 12-8, and ended the game ahead, 32-28.
- Buckeye goalie Logan Terness made 27 saves in all 60 minutes. Notre Dame's Owen Say had 27 stops in 59:15.
- Damien Carfagna led the Buckeyes with three shot blocks and Burnside had two blocks. Ohio State had 13 shot blocks as a team.
- The Buckeyes were unable to score on three power play chances and the penalty kill was 4-for-5.
- Gordon marked the first two-goal game of his collegiate career and his first two-point night. He entered the game with three career goals in his first 55 games as a Buckeye.
- Wallberg has four career multi-assist outings and has five multiple-point games in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Joe Dunlap led the Buckeyes with a career-high tying eight shots on goal.
- Thompson is second on the squad with 25 points and leads the team with 13 goals.
- Burnside has nine goals and 22 points on the year, tying for third on the team in goals and ranking third in points.
- Ohio State is allowing 2.37 goals a game this year, scoring 3.26 a contest.
- Max Montes had his six-game assist and point streaks end.
