
Ohio State Falls at Top-Ranked UCLA Wednesday Night

The Buckeyes suffered just their second loss of the season in a defensive battle in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES – The No. 8/8 Ohio State women's basketball team (20-2, 9-2 B1G) fell to No. 1/1 UCLA (22-0, 10-0 B1G) by a 65-52 margin on Wednesday night.
The first quarter featured runs by both teams as UCLA scored the final five in the frame to lead by an 18-16 margin after 10 minutes. The Bruins scored the first six points of the second quarter, but the Buckeyes had a 6-0 run of their own and trailed 30-24 at halftime. Ohio State cut its deficit to two, 44-42, by the end of the third quarter. The Buckeyes tied the game at 46 but the Bruins responded with a run that OSU couldn't overcome.
Jaloni Cambridge was the first Buckeye to reach double figures and finished the game with 21 points and tied her career-high eight rebounds. Cotie McMahon joined J. Cambridge in double figures with 14 points.
How it Happened
UCLA opened scoring and OSU responded to begin the game before the Buckeyes took their first lead at 6-4 with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter on a fastbreak layup from Chance Gray. Ohio State extended its lead to 13-6 with an extended 11-2 run, holding UCLA without a basket for more than four minutes. The Bruins scored the next seven points to tie the game at 13 with 3:16 to play in the first. UCLA led by an 18-16 margin after a pair of late free throws to close the quarter.
The Bruins scored the first four points in the second quarter to extend their lead to 22-16 with seven minutes remaining in the quarter before J. Cambridge broke the Buckeyes' scoring drought. UCLA extended its lead to 28-18 with 4:19 to play in the quarter. Ohio State scored the next six points, including a pair of layups from Elsa Lemmilä, to close the gap to 28-24 and went into the locker room behind by a 30-24 margin.
UCLA and OSU each began the third quarter with a layup and the Buckeyes got within five points at 34-29 with 6:46 remaining in the quarter. McMahon scored the next six OSU points to trim the deficit to 38-35 with 3:21 to play in the third following back-to-back baskets. Scoring alternated for the remainder of the quarter and a basket from McMahon as time expired to send the Buckeyes to the final quarter trailing just 44-42.
J. Cambridge opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to tie the game at 44 – the game's first tie since the score was 16-16 in the first quarter. UCLA scored the next six points to force an OSU timeout trailing 52-45 with just under seven minutes to play. The Bruins extended their run to 15-0 and their lead to 63-45 with 3:16 remaining, their largest lead of the game. The Buckeyes scored back-to-back baskets and scoring was capped at 65-52 on a three-pointer from J. Cambridge.
