COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2025 season with a 14-4 victory over Detroit Mercy Tuesday at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
The Short Story
After both teams scored three consecutive goals to start the game, Ohio State (1-1) took a 4-3 lead with 11:53 to play in the second quarter and didn't look back. The Buckeyes went on an 11-1 run to earn the 14-4 victory over the Titans.
Mason Bregman scored his first three goals as a Buckeye in Tuesday's game to lead the team in scoring. Eleven different players recorded a goal on the day. Griffin Turner led the team with another three-assist game.
Cullen Brown caused four turnovers and Bobby Van Buren and Greg Langermeier added three each as the Buckeye defense held the Titans to just one goal in the second half. Caleb Fyock made 10 saves in the game and Macguire Scholl played the first minutes of his Division I career, coming in for the final 2:23 of the game.
Jack Oldman finished 13-for-19 from the faceoff X and grabbed a team-high 12 ground balls on the day. Ohio State won 16 faceoffs vs. the Titans as freshman Sean Magtoto went 3-for-3.

How it Happened
- Ohio State started the game on a three-goal scoring run, started by Blake Eiland at 13:27. Shane O'Leary tallied his first goal as a Buckeye at 8:14 and the run ended with a Gannon Matthews goal at 4:25 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. Ohio State allowed just three shots in the opening frame and Fyock saved the Titans' only shot on goal.
- Detroit Mercy answered with its own scoring run in the first three minutes of the second quarter to tie the game with 12:41 to play in the half.
- The Buckeyes rattled off six straight goals to end the half with season firsts for Jack McKenna (11:53), Ed Shean (9:41) and Bregman (7:55). Goals from Ben Mayer (7:28), Garrett Haas (2:01) and Oldman (1:54) gave the Buckeyes a 9-3 advantage at the half.
- Detroit Mercy scored the first goal of the second half, but it was the only goal the Buckeyes allowed for the remainder of the game.
- Bregman added a goal in the third and fourth quarter to complete his hat trick while Haas added a man-up goal in the final seconds of the third quarter for his second tally of the day and second multi-goal outing in as many games.
- The Buckeyes scored two consecutive man-up goals as Alex Marinier capitalized on the EMO with 12:38 to play in the game.
- Tommy Janowicz scored his first career goal with 55 seconds to play in the game to cap off the Buckeyes' scoring effort.
- Fyock made four saves in the second half and Scholl recorded his first save of his Buckeye career in the final minutes of the game to hold Detroit Mercy to just four goals on the day.
