No. 15 Ohio State Upended at No. 17 McKendree, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 15 Ohio State (5-7, 2-2) fell at No. 17 McKendree (7-5, 5-1) in the first of consecutive road matches in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Thursday in McKendree, Illinois.

The Buckeyes lost by scores of 25-17, 17-25, 19-25, 20-25.

Shane Wetzel led both teams with 23 kills while hitting .391. Stanislaw Chacinski added 10 kills and eight digs.

Wetzel finished with 13 digs, to tie a career high, to reach 300 for his career (305).

Rookie setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez finished with 38 assists to surpass 300 (333) for his young career. He also had 10 digs.

Set 1 (OSU, 25-17)
Trailing 2-0, Shane Wetzel got the Buckeyes started with a kill. The Bearcats then used a 3-1 run for a 5-2 lead. The Buckeyes then scored seven of the next eight points for a 9-6 lead. Wetzel posted six kills in helping Ohio State build a 10-7 advantage. McKendree called timeout with Ohio State leading 13-9. A pair of Stanislaw Chacinski kills made it 15-11 Buckeyes after the break. Thomas Leahey and Chacinski combined for a block before a Daniel Henwood Rodriguez kill made it 17-11 Ohio State. The Buckeyes built a 21-17 advantage after a couple Bearcats service errors. A Wetzel kill and Kyle Teune ace upped the lead to 23-15. The Buckeyes took the set 25-17 after two Chacinski kills. Wetzel led with seven kills with Chacinski adding five. DHR reached 300 career assists for his young career with nine in the opening set.

Set 2 (MCK, 25-17)
The set started 6-all before the Bearcats scored consecutive points to take an 8-6 advantage. Ohio State used a 3-1 run to make it 11-10 McKendree. The Bearcats went back up 13-10 with consecutive points. McKendree built a 17-13 lead after a 3-0 run to lead to an Ohio State timeout. Wetzel's 10th kill of the night made it 19-16 Bearcats. The Buckeyes could get no closer the rest of the way to drop the set, 25-10. Â Â Â

Set 3 (MCK, 25-19)
Wetzel opened the set with an ace. The teams again went back-and-forth early in the set before a Chacinski kill and Bearcats error put the Buckeyes up 5-3. McKendree scored the next two for a tie at 5-all. The Bearcats used a 3-1 run to take a 9-8 lead before a Wetzel kill evened it at 9-all. The Buckeyes took a timeout after McKendree took a 12-10 lead. Kills by Leahey and Wetzel cut the lead to 14-13 McKendree but the Bearcats scored the next two to take a 16-13 lead. Ohio State called its final timeout of the set with McKendree leading 17-13. The Buckeyes used a 3-0 run to edge closer before a Bearcats timeout with the 21-18 lead. The Bearcats pulled away after the break to win, 25-19. Wetzel led both teams with 16 kills. Â

Wetzel and Young got the Buckeyes started with a pair of kills. Young added another for a 3-1 lead for Ohio State. Consecutive Chacinski kills made it 5-3 Buckeyes. The Bearcats tied it at 5-all before the teams started to trade points. McKendree used a 5-1 run for an 11-8 advantage. Ohio State called a timeout down 14-9. The Buckeyes started a comeback with a 3-0 run to make it 17-15 Bearcats as Wetzel reached 21 kills on the night. Ohio State got to within one at 19-18 after a Wetzel kill and an ace. The Bearcats came back with a 5-1 run for a 24-19 advantage. McKendree then finished off the set to win 25-20 for the 3-1 win.
