
Buckeyes Fall in Season Opener to Utah

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's lacrosse team opened its 2025 season Saturday afternoon against Utah at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes fell to the Utes, 19-13.
The Short Story
Ohio State trailed 6-2 after the first quarter but outscored the Utes 5-3 in the second to cut the deficit to two goals at the half. The teams each scored two consecutive goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter with Utah recording the first two and Ohio State following. After only outscoring the Buckeyes by one in the third quarter, the Utes took the 6-3 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to come away with the 19-13 win.
Sophomore Garrett Haas led the Buckeyes with a career-high five points for his first multi-point game of his career. Haas and Alex Marinier each scored a team-high four goals in the contest. In his first game as a Buckeye, Griffin Turner dished out a team-high three assists.
Cullen Brown caused three turnovers in the game and added two groundballs.
Henry Blake earned the start in goal for game one, his first game since last year's season opener vs. the Utes. Blake and Caleb Fyock split time in goal with Blake making eight saves in 33:51 minutes played and Fyock making seven saves in 26:09 minutes.
Ohio State was 17-of-18 on clears and finished 1-for-1 on the extra man opportunity.

How it Happened
- Utah scored first at 9:34 in the first quarter but the Utah lead was neutralized a minute later by Haas with the team's first goal of the season at 8:35.
- The Utes went on a four-goal run only to be halted by Haas again with 1:31 to play in the opening quarter. Utah closed the first quarter with a goal with 39 seconds remaining.
- The Utes started the second quarter scoring with a goal at 13:31 but Ohio State went on its own four-goal run with two goals from Marinier, Ryan Donnery scoring his first goal as a Buckeye and Haas completing the run with his third of the day at 2:36.
- The Ohio State scoring run was ended by a Utah goal at 5:47. Haas tallied the Buckeyes' final goal of the half at 2:36 to bring Ohio State within one before Utah scored the final goal of the half with 39 seconds remaining to take a 9-7 lead at the half.
- The Utes struck first in the second half with two goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter.
- Ohio State added goals from Marinier (12:19) and Gannon Matthews (11:20), both assisted by Griffin Turner to pull within two of Utah.
- Utah scored at 8:13 but Ben Mayer scored at 3:38 to cut the Buckeye deficit back to two goals again.
- A three-goal run by Utah starting with 1:06 to play in the third quarter put the game out of reach for Ohio State.
- White tallied the Buckeyes' first goal of the fourth quarter, and his first career goal, at 10:46.
- Over the next 10 minutes, for every two goals Utah scored, the Buckeyes responded with one.
