
Three Buckeyes Set for NCAA Singles Championship

Chavez, Nishino and Perry to play for national title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A trio of Buckeyes – Teah Chavez, Nao Nishino and Luciana Perry – will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., this week. The 64-player draw runs Tuesday through Sunday, with one round each day.
Chavez is the No. 7 seed and starts play at 9 a.m. Tuesday vs. Vanderbilt's Valeria Ray. Perry is a No. 9-16 seed and will take on Penn's Esha Velaga in the first round at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Nishino will go up against Mia Slama of NC State at 4 p.m. on day one.

- Perry is now a three-time NCAA singles qualifier. She reached the Round of 16 in her first trip in Spring 2024 and was a quarterfinalist a season ago, earning back-to-back All-America accolades. She is the first Buckeye to reach the Round of 16 twice and was the first to advance to the quarterfinals since 2001.
- Chavez and Nishino are making their first trips to the national championships.
- Chavez and Perry reached the quarterfinals of the season-opening ITA All-American Championships to clinch their NCAA berth and Nishino's run to the ITA Midwest Regional title earned her spot.
- Chavez received her first All-America accolade last season when she ended the season ranked 18th.
- Perry and Chavez were unanimous All-Big Ten selections last year and Nishino was named to the B1G All-Freshman Team. Chavez also earned the ITA Midwest Region Most Improved Player award.
- To start the year, Perry was ranked ninth, with Chavez 11th And Nishino 60th.
- This fall, Nishino was 11-3 in singles, with Chavez and Perry both 4-1.
- With Chavez and Nishino, 10 Buckeyes have competed in the NCAA Singles Championship.
- Perry is the third Buckeye to qualify for the NCAA singles championships at least three times, joining Irina Cantos Siemers (2021, '22, '23, '24) and Kristy Dascoli (1998, '99, '00, '01). Three others – Sydni Ratliff (2022, '23), Isabelle Boulais (2019, '22) and Francesa Di Lorenzo (2016, '17) – were selected twice. Anna Sanford (2018) and Monica Rincon (2002) are the Buckeyes' other NCAA singles qualifiers.
- This year is the second of a two-year pilot program with the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in the fall.
