Buckeyes Rally but Fall in OT to No. 7 Badgers, 6-5

Ohio State heads home with split and four Big Ten points
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team lost in overtime to No. 7 Wisconsin, 6-5, Saturday in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Ohio State led 2-0 early but Wisconsin went on a four-goal run for a 4-2 edge after the second period. The Buckeyes tallied three of the four goals in the third to deadlock the game, but a Wisconsin power play goal gave the home team the victory.

Ohio State earned four Big Ten points with a 5-1 win Friday and the overtime loss Saturday. The Buckeyes are now 5-5 on the year (1-3 Big Ten) and the Badgers are 8-2-2 and 4-2 in the B1G.

The Short Story
Max Montes and Adam Eisele tallied in the first 10:12 of the game for a 2-0 Buckeye lead, but the Badgers scored twice in just over four minutes and the teams were tied at two entering the first intermission. Wisconsin notched the only goals of the second period for a 4-2 advantage.

In the third, Eisele drew the Buckeyes within one less than three minutes into the period. Wisconsin answered that goal, but back to back scores from Jake Dunlap and Nathan McBrayer in a 2:13 span knotted the score at five with less than eight minutes remaining. Neither team scored the rest of regulation, securing a point in the B1G standings. A Buckeye penalty in the final minute of regulation carried into overtime and Wisconsin converted the 4-on-3 chance for the win.

The Buckeyes outshot the Badgers, 36-24, in the game. Ohio State had one power play chance and Wisconsin was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

- The Buckeyes will play at No. 2 Michigan next weekend, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Big Ten Plus will stream both games and Ohio State Radio will carry the action.

- Eisele's second goal of the game, scored on a shot back across his body, at 2:48 made it a one-goal game. Felix Caron and Riley Thompson had the assists on the tally.
- Wisconsin regained its two-goal lead (5-3) on a Vasily Zelenov goal at 7:59.

- Jake Dunlap's quick wrist shot from the left faceoff circle, set up by a Niall Crocker pass, cut the Badger advantage to one at 10:20.

- Ohio State carried play for much of the third and outshot the Badgers, 12-4, in the period.

Buckeye This and That
- Eisele had his first two-goal game as a Buckeye and the third of his collegiate career. He had a team-best three goals and four points in the series.
- Eisele and Montes, who scored in each game against Wisconsin, lead the Buckeyes with five goals each this season.
- Karabela has a team-best eight assists and shares the point lead with Caron with nine.
- Thompson had his first multiple assist game since last November. It was his fourth with two or more assists as a Buckeye and he has eight in his collegiate career.
- The Buckeyes were 6-for-7 on the penalty kill in the series. Wisconsin came into the weekend first nationally on the power play.
- The loss was the Buckeyes' second in overtime this season. All five losses on the year have been by one goal.
