
Buckeyes Battle to 5-1 Win over No. 7 Badgers

Eisele, Karabela and Montes each notch two points, Eberly makes 30 saves
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team skated to a 5-1 win at No. 7 Wisconsin Friday evening in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period and carried the lead into the second intermission. Wisconsin drew within one halfway through the third but the Buckeyes ended the game on a three-goal run.

The Buckeyes, now 5-4 on the year (1-2 Big Ten) and Badgers (7-2-2, 3-2 B1G) will close the weekend series at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. The game will be streamed by B1G+ and on Ohio State Radio.

The Short Story
Ohio State led 1-0 after the opening period on a Ryan Gordon power play goal. Neither team found the back of the net in the second. In the third, Adam Eisele put the Buckeyes up 2-0 early. Ohio State maintained the lead for more than eight minutes until the Badgers drew within one at 11:34. Less than two minutes later Max Montes, a Wisconsin native, converted on a breakaway to regain the Buckeyes' two-goal edge. Freshman Jake Karabela notched his first collegiate goal at 13:55 and captain Davis Burnside sealed the win with an empty net goal at 16:33.

The Buckeyes were outshot, 31-20, in the game and Kristoffer Eberly had 30 stops in the victory. Ohio State was 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, allowing just four shots on goal in the five chances combined. The Buckeyes were 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

How it Happened
- At 3:33 Ryan Gordon took a Max Montes pass, spun and scored from just outside the crease with the Buckeyes on the power play. Bryce Ingles had the second helper on the goal, Gordon's first of the year.
- Wisconsin led early in shots, 5-1, but Ohio State ended the period ahead, 8-7. The Buckeyes had the only power play chance of the opening stanza.
- Neither team tallied in the second, with Wisconsin recording nine of the 13 shots on goal. The Badgers had three power play chances, with the Buckeyes notching just one abbreviated opportunity.
- A 3-on-1 chance for the Buckeyes early in the third led to an Adam Eisele goal, as the puck came to him up inside the faceoff circle and he tallied at 3:23. Jake Dunlap and Jake Karabela posted the helpers on the score.
- At 11:34 Wisconsin's Simon Tassy converted from the faceoff circle for a one-goal game.
- The Buckeyes responded, as a Nathan McBrayer pass set up a Montes breakaway and his shot snuck through and over the line for a 3-1 Ohio State lead at 12:59. Chris Able also posted an assist on the score.
- Freshman Jake Karabela stuff in a loose puck at 13:55 for his first collegiate goal and a 4-1 Ohio State edge. Eisele and William Smith had the assists on the tally.
- Wisconsin pulled its goalie with more than three minutes remaining. A Davis Burnside shot from the Ohio State zone after a Buckeye faceoff win found the net and put the Buckeyes up 5-1 at 16:33.
- Ohio State was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill in the third, allowing two shots on net.
- Buckeye goalie Kristoffer Eberly stopped 14-of-15 shots in the third period and ended the game with 30 saves while playing 59:48. Ohio State had 20 shots on net in the win and Wisconsin's Daniel Hauser made 15 saves in 59:27.
- The Buckeyes were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the victory and 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
