COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team fell to No. 3 Minnesota, 3-1, Friday night in Minneapolis.
The Buckeyes (20-6-3, 14-6-3 WCHA) and Gophers (22-5-1, 16-4-1 WCHA) close the regular season series at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Ridder Arena. The season series is even at 1-1-1 entering the matchup.
Short Story
Friday's game in Minneapolis was decided in the third period. The teams were scoreless through the first 40 minutes but put four goals on the board in the final 19 minutes of play.
Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele came up with key saves in the early minutes of the first period to hold off the early Gopher pressure. Six of her eight saves of the period were made before the media timeout at 10:37. The graduate student added six saves in the second period as the Buckeyes outshot the Gophers, 15-6, in the middle frame.
Minnesota's first goal came just over a minute into the third period on the power play and the team went on to score two more goals in the next eight minutes.
Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall made the decision to empty the Buckeye net with 4:45 remaining in the third period for the extra skater. Emily Zumwinkle scored the extra attacker goal seconds after a power play expired at 17:59 to halt the Minnesota momentum.
On the Buckeyes' next trip to the Gophers' zone, Thiele was pulled again and with six skaters in the final minute and a half Ohio State made one final push to score but was not able to light the lamp again.

- Zumwinkle's second goal of the season, and sixth of her career, came in familiar territory. She is a Minnesota transfer finishing her collegiate career this season with the Buckeyes. The Excelsior, Minn. native also has seven assists for nine points this year.
- The Buckeyes' loss at Minnesota is just their third road loss of the season.
