Ohio State Posts Top Finishes at OSU Open

17 Buckeyes earned Top 3 finishes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the first day of the 2024-25 campaign, 17 members of the Ohio State fencing program earned Top 3 finishes in the OSU Open in French Field House. Gold medalists Solin Li, Miles Weiss, Nolan Williams, Alina Lee and Grace Fan led the way for the Scarlet and Gray.

The OSU Duals
The Buckeyes will close the weekend with the OSU Duals Sunday. The event features five rounds of dual competition, with Ohio State, Oberlin, Cleveland State, Denison, Georgia Tech and the OSU Club team participating. Results will be updated throughout the day on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.

Round 1 (8 a.m.) – Ohio State vs. Oberlin, OSU Club vs. Cleveland State, Denison vs. Georgia Tech
Round 2 (9:30 a.m.) – Ohio State vs. Cleveland State, Oberlin vs. Denison, Georgia Tech vs. OSU Club
Round 3 (11 a.m.) – Ohio State vs. Denison, Cleveland State vs. Georgia Tech, Oberlin vs. OSU Club
12:30 p.m. – Lunch break
Round 4 (1:30 p.m.) – Ohio State vs. Georgia Tech, Oberlin vs. Cleveland State, Denison vs. OSU Club
Round 5 (3 p.m.) – Ohio State vs. OSU Club, Cleveland State vs. Denison, Oberlin vs. Georgia Tech

Men's Foil
Ohio State had three of the four finalists in men's foil and five of the Top 8 finishers. Solin Li defeated teammate Samuel Freedman in the final, 15-7. Li advanced with a 15-7 win over Buckeye Ilya Ayupov and Freedman won his semifinal bout, 15-12. Lorenzo Mion and Isaac Ariza also placed in the Top 8.

Men's Epee
An all-Buckeye final ended with Miles Weiss as the champion, as he defeated Gabriel Feinberg, 15-8. Weiss was a 15-13 victor in his semifinal and Feinberg downed Buckeye Kinley Lavenstein in the other semifinal. Newcomer Viktor Kulcsar was the No. 1 seed after pools and placed fifth in his first collegiate event after falling to Lavenstein 15-13 in the Table of 8.

Men's Sabre
It was an all-Buckeye semifinal in men's sabre. Nolan Williams posted two 15-14 wins en route to the title, defeating freshman Eddie Maklin in the semifinals and Samuel Rightler in the final. Rightler was a 15-10 victor over Buckeye freshman James Schardine in the other semifinal. Hank Bauer was fifth and Kelly Liu placed seventh to close out the Buckeyes in the event.

Women's Foil
All four Buckeyes in women's foil finished in the Top 8. Alina Lee advanced to the final with a 15-8 semifinal win and was then a 15-7 winner over teammate Claire Teresa Galavotti in the championship bout. Galavotti posted a 15-11 victory over Raiyan Moradi-Bidhendi in their semifinal bout. Anna Heiser was sixth after reaching the Table of 8.

Women's Epee
Buckeyes took four of the Top 8 spots in women's epee. Lucy Whittemore and Sally Fan reached the semifinals before falling 15-6 and 15-7, respectively. Whittemore was a 15-7 winner in the quarterfinals and Fan, the No. 2 seed, defeated her teammate Julia Semikin 15-11 in their Table of 8 bout. Catherine Zhou was fifth, with Julia Semikin sixth, after advancing to the Table of 8.

Women's Sabre
Freshman Grace Fan claimed the women's sabre title by one touch, 15-14, over Miyuki Endo of Denison. Buckeye Katherine Larimer was tied for third, as she reached the semis but fell by a touch after winning her Table of 8 bout, 15-3. Maria Alexe, who was the No. 2 seed, was sixth on the day, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Fan.
