Is the first-ever American woman to make an Olympic final
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Katelyn Abeln's first Olympic experience was a memorable one, as she competed in two different events over the last two weeks and made a bit of history in the process.
Abeln, a Douglasville, Ga. native who helped the Buckeyes win four consecutive national titles from 2021-24, shot in the 10m air pistol and 25m sport pistol events. She placed 24th in air pistol and was the top American in the final standings. It was in the sport pistol, however, that she really excelled.
Abeln's scores in the qualification rounds put her in eighth place as she moved on to the finals, which took place on Saturday morning. Her eighth-place finish marked the first time the United States has had a woman make the Olympic finals. Finals were introduced in shooting in the 1988 Olympics. The United States had a medalist in the games held in 1984.
Abeln's teammate last seasons with the Buckeyes, Ada Korkhin, finished 32nd in the sport pistol on Friday. She is a rising sophomore who was competing in her first Olympic games.
Ohio State has one remaining shooter left to compete in Paris – on Sunday, Henery Leverett, who recently graduated with his degree in international relations and diplomacy, will be a part of stage one of the qualification stage of the 25m rapid fire pistol.
