COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight athletes with ties to the Ohio State swimming and diving program are in Paris to compete in the Olympics starting this weekend. Former Buckeyes Hunter Armstrong, Ciara McGing and Kristen Romano, current athletes Alex Axon, Lena Hentschel, Tristan Jankovics and Tomas Navikonis, and incoming Buckeye Emma Finlin are all set to compete in Paris.
Armstrong will swim for Team USA for the second straight Olympic Games. Armstrong won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the 4x100 medley relay, after helping Team USA to a spot in the relay finals. He will compete in the 100 back and the 4x100 free relay this year. At the Olympic Trials last month, he placed second in the 100 back with a time of 52.72 and in the 100 free, he finished fourth with a personal-best time of 47.78 to secure a spot on the relay team.
Hentschel will also compete in her second straight Olympics for Team Germany. She was a bronze medalist in the 3-meter synchronized dive in Tokyo. Hentschel punched her ticket to Paris in two events during the World Aquatics Championships in February, after placing sixth in both the 3-meter synchronized dive (273.93) and the 3-meter springboard dive (289.95).
Axon, Jankovics and Finlin will all represent Team Canada and it is the first career Olympics for all three swimmers. Axon and Jankovics both earned their spots on the Canadian team at Bell Canadian Trials earlier this summer. Axon picked up a win in the 200 free with a personal-best time of 1:47.76 to earn a spot on the 800 free relay team. Jankovics won the 400 IM with an Olympic qualifying time of 4:11.74. Finlin will compete in open water swimming, a 10-kilometer marathon swim. After missing qualifying for the Olympics by 0.7 seconds at the World Aquatics Championships, a reallocation of quota spots earned her a spot on the Olympic team.
Navikonis will swim for Team Lithuania in the 4x200 free relay in his first career Olympic Games. Navikonis and his teammates earned a seventh-place finish in the event with a time of 7:11.47 at the World Aquatics Championships to earn their spot.
McGing will dive on the 10-meter platform for Team Ireland in Paris. McGing was officially named to Ireland's Olympic roster on July 4. It is her first Olympics.
Romano will also swim at her first career Olympics, representing Team Puerto Rico in the 200 IM. She turned in a time of 2:13.09 at the Atlanta Classic to win the event and ultimately secure her spot on Puerto Rico's Olympic roster.
