
Perry, Cantos Siemers Receive ITA Regional Awards

Perry named Rookie of the Year, Cantos Siemers receives Sportsmanship Honor
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Luciana Perry has been named the ITA Midwest Region Rooke of the Year and Irina Cantos Siemers was the recipient of the ITA Midwest Region Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Wednesday.Â
Perry is the sixth Buckeye selected the ITA Rookie of the Year for the Midwest Region, joining Isabelle Boulais (2019), Gabriella DeSantis (2014), Francesca Di Lorenzo (2016), Shiori Fukuda (2018) and Sydni Ratliff (2022).
The ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship goes to a Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary. Buckeye Miho Kowase also won the award in 2016.Â
Perry, from Export, Pa., was selected the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and named to the All-Big Ten team while also earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team. Perry was an NCAA qualifier in singles and doubles (with two partners) and was the only freshman to reach the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship, with her two wins clinching All-America honors. She was recently named to the USTA 2024 USTA Collegiate Summer Team, one of six women's players and the only underclassmen in the six-player group. In the ITA rankings, Perry ended the year ranked 47th in singles and 25th (with Irina Cantos Siemers) and 27th (with Sydni Ratliff) in doubles. On the year, she was 27-12 overall in singles, with a 14-5 dual mark, and 16 of her dual matches were on courts one and two. In doubles, Perry was 28-12, tying the Ohio State record for doubles wins by a freshman.  Â
The Ohio State captain this season, Cantos Siemers wrapped up her five-year Buckeye career this spring as the all-time leader in singles wins and combined singles/doubles victories. She is the program's first three-time All-American and first two-time Academic All-American. The 2023 Big Ten Player of the Year, she was a four-time unanimous All-Big Ten honoree who earned her bachelor's degree in Autumn 2022 and her master's this spring. This season Cantos Siemers made her fourth appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship,,reaching the Round of 16, and ended the year ranked 13th. She also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship for the second time.Â
