
The People: Sharipov Inducted into International Gymnastics Hall of Fame

Ohio State Head Coach Rustam Sharipov was one of four members of this year’s induction class.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rustam Sharipov, Head Coach of Ohio State's men's gymnastics team, was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame (IGHOF) on Saturday. Sharipov (Ukraine) was inducted with three other individuals – Carly Patterson (USA), Julianne McNamara (USA) and Josef Stalder (SUI – posthumous).
The IGHOF was founded in 1987 in Oceanside, California and currently resides in Oklahoma City. The Hall of Fame has honored 136 gymnasts from 22 countries over the past 26 years.
Sharipov is a three-time Olympic medalist. He first won gold with the Unified Team in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. At the following Olympics, 1996 in Atlanta, Sharipov won the individual gold medal on parallel bars and the team bronze medal with the Ukrainian team. He also took gold on parallel bars at the 1995 World Championships after finishing as the runner-up and winning silver the year prior. Sharipov reached the highest achievable athletic level of an individual in the former Soviet Union when he was awarded Master of Sport in 1992. Sharipov won countless other medals at international competitions such as the U.S. Olympic Cup, European Championships, CIS Championships, DTB Cup, Tokyo Cup, French International, Nikon International and International Championships of Romania. He retired from competitive gymnastics and moved to the United States in 2000.
Sharipov was named the eighth head coach in Ohio State program history in the summer of 2011. Throughout his 13 years as a Buckeye, he has coached three NCAA individual Champions, 13 Big Ten individual champions, 18 All-Americans (earning a total of 35 All-America awards) and has led the Buckeyes to three Big Ten Championships (one regular season). The 2016 Big Ten Coach of the Year was also honored as the 2014 CGA Central Region Coach of the Year. Sharipov coached Olympic pommel horse finalist, Alec Yoder, during his time as a Buckeye as Yoder claimed the 2019 NCAA pommel horse title.
