Perry named freshman of the year, Cantos Siemers earns fourth spot on All-Big Ten team
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A trio of Buckeyes – Irina Cantos Siemers, Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff – has been selected to the women's tennis All-Big Ten team, and Perry was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. The 14 league coaches vote on the end of season awards, with Cantos Siemers a unanimous selection.
Perry is the seventh Buckeye, and sixth under head coach Melissa Schaub, to earn league freshman of the year honors, joining Ratliff (2022), Isabelle Boulais (2019), Shiori Fukuda (2018), Francesca Di Lorenzo (2016), Gabriella DeSantis (2014) and Kristy Dascoli (1998).
Cantos Siemers, who was a unanimous selection for the fourth time, is the fourth Buckeye to earn four all-league honors, joining Dascoli, DeSantis and Anna Sanford. Ratliff earned her second consecutive all-conference honor.
Perry, from Export, Pa., is 10-4 in dual matches this spring and was 7-1 in B1G action. She has posted an 8-2 ledger on court two, along with a 2-1 court three mark and one loss on court one. Perry has been ranked in the Top 85 in singles since the end of the fall season, reaching a high of No. 41. Overall, she has a 21-10 singles record in her first collegiate season. In doubles, Perry is 12-5 in dual matches and was 7-2 in B1G action. She leads the Buckeyes with 24 overall doubles victories and has been ranked with three doubles partners in the ITA rankings, reaching as high as No. 17 with Ratliff.
A Brussels, Belgium, native, Cantos Siemers, who has been ranked in the singles Top 20 throughout the year, is 14-4 in dual matches (6-2 in B1G play), all on court one. The graduate student is first on the squad with 26 overall singles wins this year. She has been ranked in doubles with three different partners this season and has a 12-6 record this spring, with a 22-15 mark overall. The team captain, she became the program leader in career singles wins (122) and combined singles/doubles victories (214) this season.
Ratliff, a junior from Columbus and Columbus Academy graduate, has a 10-6 dual record in singles, with a 3-3 court two record and 7-3 mark on court three, and was 6-0 in B1G matches. She is 14-13 overall this year and has been ranked in singles the majority of the season. In doubles, Ratliff is 9-5 in dual matches, with a 4-2 ledger in league play. She is 14-9 on the year and has been ranked nationally with both Perry and Cantos Siemers.
The Buckeyes are the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. Ohio State will open play at 2 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round against the winner of a match between No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Penn State.
