
Cantos Siemers Recognized as B1G Athlete of the Week

Captain posted four wins last weekend, including clinch point Sunday on Senior Day
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Irina Cantos Siemers, a graduate student on the Ohio State women's tennis team, has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday. This is the fifth career league weekly honor for Cantos Siemers.

In the final matches of the regular season, No. 17-ranked Cantos Siemers posted four wins - two at No. 1 singles and two at No. 1 doubles as the Buckeyes defeated Northwestern and Illinois to secure the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament with a 10-1 conference record.

Against the Wildcats last Friday, Cantos Siemers and freshman Luciana Perry posted the first doubles win. She then put the Buckeyes up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 singles victory. In the Senior Day match vs. Illinois last Sunday, she and Perry posted a 6-2 win over the Illini's No. 73-ranked duo to open doubles. In her final regular season match, Cantos Siemers clinched the 4-2 team victory, winning the final five games to take her match, 6-4, 7-5.

Cantos Siemers' wins Friday gave her a program-record 214 combined singles and doubles victories. She was already the program's leader in career singles wins and now has 122.

She has a team-best 14 dual match wins this season, all on court one, and is first on the squad with 26 total singles victories.

The Buckeyes are the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich. Ohio State will open play at 2 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round against the winner of a match between No. 7 Iowa and No. 10 Penn State.
