COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s run of dominance has continued for another year as the top-ranked Buckeyes swept Wisconsin 7-0 Sunday and claimed their 18th consecutive Big Ten title.
Ohio State, which improves to 27-1 overall on the season, has hoisted the trophy every year since 2006. The streak of 18 consecutive titles streak is the second-longest in any sport in Big Ten history, trailing just Iowa wrestling’s streak of 25 consecutive titles from 1974-98.
The dominance over the Big Ten since 2006 has been remarkable as the Buckeyes’ Big Ten record during the streak is 188-2. Overall, Ohio State is 584-62 since the streak started in 2006.
On Sunday, Ohio State completed a 9-0 Big Ten season by beating Wisconsin (1-21, 0-9) for the 34th consecutive time.
Fifth-year senior Robert Cash was part of the winning doubles team on court one, giving him 140 career doubles wins. That pushes him past Peter Kobelt (2011-14) for the most doubles wins in program history.
Cash and JJ Tracy rolled 6-0 in just 22 minutes. That was the lone recorded doubles win as Wisconsin had to forfeit on court three due to injury. Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns were leading 4-2 on court two when the point was secured.
In singles, Wisconsin also forfeited the matches at five and six, giving the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead to start. The first Buckeye done in singles was Tracy as he beat Gabriel Huber 6-1, 6-2. Alexander Bernard followed quickly with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Matthew Fullerton on court four. After Cannon Kingsley 6-3, 6-0 win on court one, Jack Anthrop provided the final point with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court three.
Anthrop and Bernard have been unstoppable this spring as they are a combined 43-0.
The Buckeyes will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big Ten Tournament and will open play at 10 a.m. Friday morning against either Wisconsin or Penn State.
