The Buckeyes are tied for seventh through one round
COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a cool April afternoon, senior Jackson Chandler fired a 3-udner 68 to lead Ohio State on day one of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at the OSU Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.
Chandler had the low score of 11 Buckeyes in action this weekend. He bogeyed his opening hole of the day, the par-4 10th, and then made a nice curling eagle putt at No. 12 to get into the red. He then parred the next 12 holes before finishing with birdies in two of his final three holes. He is in third place alone, just one shot out of the lead.
Out of the rest of the scoring five, Neal Shipley led the way with a 74 and was followed by Adam Wallin with a 75, Tyler Sabo with a 76 and Maxwell Moldovan with a 77. That gave the Buckeyes an opening round of 293 and they are tied for seventh, but just six shots out of the top spot.
Patrick Schmuecking has battled a back injury this season but he opened with a solid round of 1-over 72. Like Chandler, he birdied two of his final three holes. Topher Reed made a couple of birdies down the stretch to match Schmuecking with a 72. Drew Mulcahy turned in a nice round of 2-over 73 and then Tyler Groomes, Jack Vojtko and Jacob Tarkany all carded opening rounds of 5-over 76.
The Buckeyes will open the second round at 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning off the first tee. Admission and parking are free all weekend.
