Buckeyes Drop 13-10 Game to No. 3 Notre Dame

Columbus Ohio – The Ohio State men's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Notre Dame, 13-10, Saturday afternoon at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The game saw Notre Dame pull away in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Buckeyes drop to 4-3.
The Short Story
Notre Dame started the game with the first three goals and led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. Ohio State responded in the second, cutting the deficit to one before Notre Dame recorded its second three-goal run for a 6-2 advantage. Ohio State ended the run with 5:35 left for a 6-3 game at the half. The Buckeyes outscored the Irish 5-2 in the third quarter for a one-goal game (8-7) through 45 minutes. Notre Dame scored four times to start the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 12-7. Ohio State scored three of the last four goals for the 13-10 final.
Ohio State picked up 30 ground balls on the day, led by Tommy Burke with four. Burke also recorded a team-best nine faceoff wins.
Buckeye freshman goalie Caleb Fyock put up his third straight game will double-digit saves, ending the game with 11. Ohio State outshot Notre Dame, 43-36.
Matt Caputo and Blake Eiland led the Buckeyes in goals and points with three apiece. The goals were Caputo's first of the season, while Eiland stretched his goal scoring streak to three games. Ed Shean had two assists, while Gannon Matthews, Ari Allen and Jack McKenna each notched a goal and an assist for two points.
How the Goals Were Scored
- Notre Dame took a 3-0 first-quarter lead, including two goals from Chris Kavanaugh.
- Ohio State responded with two quick goals to start the second. Blake Eiland scored on a diving shot in front at 12:39 and Ari Allen followed with a goal at 11:17.
- The Irish went on a 3-0 scoring run for a 6-2 advantage with 9:20 left in the second quarter, with all three goals scored man-up in a 1:29 span.
- Buckeye Gannon Matthews intercepted a Notre Dame clearing pass and slotted it away at 5:35 for a 6-3 game. Neither team scored the rest of the half.
- Ohio State opened the second-half scoring with a goal from Matt Caputo, his first of the season.
- After a Notre Dame tally, Caputo fired home his second of the day to make it 7-5 at 8:40.
- Blake Eiland's second goal of the game then drew Ohio State within one (7-6) with 5:37 left in the third.
- Notre Dame regained its two-goal lead at 3:42, but an Alex Marinier tally for Ohio State, set up by Jack McKenna, made it a one-goal game entering the fourth quarter (8-7).
- Notre Dame went on a four-goal run to start the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to its largest of the game, 12-7, with 7:40 left.
- Blake Eiland stopped the run, as he completed his hat trick at 7:07, with Gannon Matthews on the assist. McKenna scored on a turning jump shot just over a minute later for a 12-9 game.
- Each team scored once in the final 3:26. The Irish tallied man-up at 3:26 and Ed Shean found Caputo for a goal at 1:21, marking his third tally of the day.
