COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's lacrosse team earned a 16-10 win over Detroit Mercy Tuesday night at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes improve to 5-3 on the year and pick up their fourth win at home.
The Short Story
Ohio State started fast with a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and led by as much as seven goals in the first 16 minutes of the game. Despite a second-quarter push from the Titans, the Buckeyes grew their lead back to six goals by the end of the game to earn the win.
Twelve Buckeyes recorded a point and of the nine goal-scorers, Ben Mayer, Jack McKenna and Matt Caputo recorded hat tricks. Brett Gladstone tallied his first goal as a Buckeye and Caputo's hat trick was his second in as many games.
Freshman Jack Oldman went 17-of-21 at the faceoff X for the Buckeyes and grabbed a career-high 14 ground balls in the game. Fourteen ground balls and 17 faceoff wins is also a season-best mark for the team this year. He added his first career points with a goal and an assist.
The team hit season-high marks in goals (16), assists (6), points (22), ground balls (52) and faceoff percentage (.786). The Buckeyes allowed a season-low 24 shots in the game.
In goal, both Caleb Fyock and Danny Brady saw time.

How the Goals Were Scored
- Ohio State started the game with a 7-1 lead after the first quarter. Jack McKenna scored unassisted at 14:20 to put the Buckeyes on the board first and was followed by a goal from Matt Caputo at 13:03 for a 2-0 advantage in the first two minutes.
- A Detroit Mercy goal at 10:23 cut the Buckeyes' lead to one, but the Buckeyes responded just six seconds later with Oldman winning the ensuing faceoff and passing to Alex Marinier, who ripped a shot into the Titan's goal.
- Ohio State scored six goals in the final ten minutes of the quarter. Caputo added his second of the day at 8:13 and Kurt Bruun and Gannon Matthews capitalized on man-up opportunities at 5:37 and 4:40, respectively.
- Mayer scored his first of the game at 4:11 in the first quarter to give Ohio State the six-goal advantage after 15 minutes.
- Gladstone's first career goal came 38 seconds into the second quarter to extend the Buckeye lead to 8-1.
- Detroit Mercy outscored the Buckeyes 5-1 in the second quarter, including one man-up goal, to make the game 9-6 in favor of Ohio State at the half.
- McKenna ended the Titan's scoring stretch with a goal at 13:40 in the third quarter. He was once again followed by a goal from Caputo, with the sophomore scoring at 5:46 to complete his hat trick.
- Detroit Mercy added a goal at 1:53, but Ohio State was quick to respond again, scoring 10 seconds later. It was Oldman again with the faceoff win, and this time he got to take the shot, finishing top right of the Titan goal at 1:43 in the third.
- Following two more goals from the Titans – one with a second remaining in the third and the other at 12:31 in the fourth – the Buckeyes went on a four-goal run as Ari Allen tallied one at 11:56, Mayer scored at 8:49 and 7:30 to complete his hat trick and McKenna also recorded his third at 8:15 to give the team a 15-9 lead.
- Both programs added another goal on the day, with the Titans recording their final tally at 3:01 and Marinier earning the last strike for the Buckeyes at 1:27.
