COLUMBUS, Ohio – Penn State fought back from a 6-1 deficit to defeat Ohio State, 12-9, Sunday afternoon at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium in front of 2,156 fans. The win was the No. 7 Nittany Lions' seventh consecutive and improved their record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Ohio State falls to 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in the Big Ten. All five of their losses have come against Top 10 teams and three of them to 2023 NCAA Final Four teams. Â

The Short Story
Penn State outscored the Buckeyes, 8-2, in the second half after trailing at halftime, 7-4. The Nittany Lions tied the score at 7-all with 13 seconds to play in the third quarter and then went ahead, 8-7, for its first lead since the first quarter. Ed Shean, who led the Buckeyes with three goals on the day, tied it up at 8-8 with his third of the game with 6:31 left to play. But Penn State scored four consecutive and held on for the win.
Ohio State led, 7-4, at the end of the first half off two goals apiece from Alex Marinier and Shean, and single markers from Ben Mayer, Gannon Matthews and Blake Eiland. Penn State led, 1-0, with a goal nine minutes into the game, but the Buckeyes countered with six consecutive goals to go up 6-1. The Nittany Lions scored three consecutive to close to within 6-4, but Eiland's goal stopped that string and was the last of the half.Â

Goalie Caleb Fyock made eight first-half saves and 12 for the game. The Nittany Lions led in shots, 40-37, and in face-offs won, 15-10. Each team had 13 turnovers and six caused turnovers.Â

How The Goals Were Scored
- It took nearly nine minutes of action before the first score of the game, a shot by Mac Costin that bounced by Ohio State goalie Caleb Fyock after four saves to open the game.
- About 90 seconds later and with Ohio State a man up, Alex Marinier fired a laser over the left shoulder of Penn State goalie Jack Fracyon with the assist to Kurt Brunn. The goal was Marinier's team-leading 16th of the season.
- Sweet passing at 1:30 of the first quarter gave Ohio State its first lead of the game. Ed Shean took a pass in front of the goal from Jack McKenna and buried it for a 2-1 lead.
- Then with 22 seconds left in the period, Ben Mayer scored unassisted for a 3-1 Buckeye lead. The goal was Mayer's 16th of the season.
- Gannon Matthews' 16th goal of the season – also unassisted – a minute into the second quarter extended Ohio State's lead to 4-1.
- Shean's second goal of the game and 11th of the season, from Marcus Hudgins, made the score 5-1 with 8:59 to play in the second quarter.
- Moments later, Marinier scored his second of the game to increase the lead to 6-1 Buckeyes. Credit Matt Caputa on the assist.
- Luke Mercer stopped the six-goal Ohio State run with an unassisted goal at 7:32, making the score 6-2.
- Penn State climbed to within 6-3 with another unassisted goal by TJ Malone at 6:30 of the second.
- At 5:44, Penn State scored again, this time an unassisted goal by Luke Walstrum to make the score 6-4 and prompting an Ohio State timeout.Â
- Blake Eiland scored his seventh goal of the season with 2:25 to play in the second to stop Penn State's mini-run of goals and extend the Buckeye lead to 7-4. Caputa on the assist.
- Penn State opened the scoring in the third quarter with an unassisted goal by Matt Traynor to cut the Buckeye lead to 7-5.
- Penn State scored again at 7:12 of the third off another unassisted goal by Traynor to make the score 7-6.Â
- A third consecutive Penn State unassisted goal, by Mac Costin, tied the score at 7-all with just 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- A second goal of the game by Malone, off an assist from Kyle Lehman, gave Penn State its first lead since the first quarter at 8-7 just a minute into the fourth quarter.
- Ohio State tied the score at 8-all on Shean's third goal of the game and 12th of the season with 6:31 to go in the fourth quarter. He came from all the way around the goal for the score.
- But 25 seconds later Penn State regained the lead as Jake Morin scored unassisted to make the score 9-8.
- Penn State reached its first two-goal lead of the game at 10-8 with five minutes left to play on a goal from Costin with Malone getting the assist.Â
- Grant Haus and Matt Traynor scored with 3:31 to play and 1:57, respectively, to increase the Penn State lead to 12-8.
- Ohio State continued to battle, and at 1:44 Caputo scored off a feed from Jack Oldman to get to within three at 12-9.
