Jasmyn Burns delivers a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning for the winning runs
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio State softball team worked overtime on Wednesday against Austin Peay but came away with a 7-5 come-from-behind victory at Cheryl Holt Field.
The Buckeyes scored the go-ahead runs with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, as freshman Jasmyn Burns, the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, delivered a two-out, two-run single. Pitcher Allison Smith then worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the inning.
The win, Ohio State's third in a row, improves its record to 13-6. Austin Peay has a six-game winning streak snapped.
How The Runs Were Scored
- After a double play ended the Ohio State half of the first inning, Austin Peay's Kendyl Weinzapel hit a two-out, two-run triple to deep center field that put the Governors ahead 2-0.
- Ohio State grabbed its first lead of the day in the top of the fourth inning, as Hannah Church and Destinee Noury had back-to-back base hits (a single and double, respectively) to set the stage for Kami Kortokrax, who hit her fifth home run of the season to put the Buckeyes ahead 3-2.
- For Kortokrax, it was her fourth home run in the last seven games and RBI 12, 13 and 14 for the season.
- The Governors grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run home run by Brie Howard, who put Austin Peay ahead 5-3.
- Ohio State punched right back, however, tying the game in the top of the sixth thanks to a McKenzie Bump home run and wild pitch that scored Kirsten Eppele from third base.
- After Austin Peay stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning and Allison Smith's strikeout forced extra innings, Burns' two-out single with the bases loaded scored two wins and gave Ohio State a 7-5 lead.
- Ohio State's eight-inning rally was made possible by singles from McKenzie Bump, Kaitlyn Farley and Tegan Cortelletti.
That and That
- Wednesday was the first-ever meeting between Ohio State and Austin Peay.
- Tegan Cortelletti entered Wednesday's game with a 10-game hitting streak. In that span, she's collected 18 hits, is batting .545 and is 7-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
- She extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the third inning.
- Her .479 batting average prior to Wednesday's game was the best in the Big Ten among players with 40 or more at-bats.
- Bump's home run in the sixth inning was her second of the spring break trip and fourth of her career.
