Navikonis Wins 200 Free on Third Day of Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tomas Navikonis won gold in the 200 freestyle as the No. 13 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team moved into second place after three days of competition at the Big Ten Championships.
Navikonis is the first gold medalist of the conference championships for the Buckeyes. He raced to an exciting first-place finish in the 200 free, touching the wall .02 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Indiana. Navikonis' winning time was an NCAA B standard of 1:32.01, which is the 10th-fastest time in the country this season.
Also competing in the A final of the 200 free, Alex Axon finished seventh with an NCAA B standard time of 1:35.34. In the C final, Mario McDonald placed eighth with a time of 1:37.54.
Chachi Gustafson finished seventh in the A final of the 100 fly, turning in an NCAA B standard time of 45.89. Evan Fentress placed second in the B final with an NCAA B cut time of 46.09. In the C final, Jean-Pierre Khouzam finished seventh, touching the wall at 47.43.
In the 400 IM, Tristan Jankovics earned a fourth-place finish, swimming the individual medley in 3:43.04, which is an NCAA B standard time. Sam Campbell finished just behind Jankovics in fifth place with an NCAA B cut time of 3:43.95.
Alex Metzler was the winner of the 400 IM B final, turning in an NCAA B standard time of 3:44.95. Billy Regan's NCAA B cut time of 3:47.99 earned him fourth in the B final.
Lyle Yost placed fourth in the A final of the 3-meter dive with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 435.25. Clayton Chaplin finished seventh with a score of 339.15 and Kylie Flory finished eighth with a score of 328.75. Chaplin and Flory's scores are both NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
Jack Matthews was the second-place diver in the consolation final of the 3-meter dive; he recorded an overall score of 346.65. Tyler Read (338.05) and Mo Noaman (308.80) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Matthews and Read's scores are NCAA Zones qualifying scores. The Buckeyes earned 117 total points towards the team score via diving.
Karl Helmuth placed second in the B final of the 100 breast; he recorded an NCAA B cut time of 52.85. Billy Regan was the winner of the C final with an NCAA B standard time of 53.41. Pete Krusinski placed fifth in the C final; he finished in 53.88.
Gustafson finished eighth in the B final of the 100 back; he recorded an NCAA B cut time of 47.26.
The Buckeyes placed fifth in the 200 free relay to close out the night. The team of Fentress, Daniel Baltes, McDonald and Krusinski finished in 1:17.43.
Ohio State has moved into second place in the team standings with 820 total points.
Prior to the start of the meet, the Big Ten announced the Sportsmanship Award honorees from each school. Fentress received the award for the Buckeyes.
The final day of the Big Ten Championships will take place on Saturday, March 2 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m. and finals will get underway at 5:00 p.m. The final day's events are the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, platform diving and the 400 free relay.
