COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team fell to Penn State, 5-2, Friday in game one of a two-game series in Value City Arena.

The series wraps up the regular season for the Buckeyes (12-17-4, 4-17-2 B1G) and Nittany Lions (14-16-3, 6-14-3 B1G). The teams will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the Buckeyes' Class of 2024 recognized pregame. Script Ohio on Ice will be performed during the first intermission. Friday, Penn State opened the scoring with a power play goal on a major at 11:41 of the first period, answered with a shorthanded tally from Buckeye Dalton Messina less than a minute later. PSU went back ahead shortly after the major ended and did not trail again. The Nittany Lions scored the only two goals of the second and notched the first tally in the third. Scooter Brickey ended the scoring in the final minute with a power play goal.

Messina is the first Buckeye with three shorthanded goals since Anthony Greco in 2015-16. He has a career-best six goals and 13 points on the year. Brickey now has 12 goals, the most for a Buckeye defenseman since Ryan Root scored 12 in 1996-97. He is the first Buckeye blueliner with double-digit goals since Root had 11 in 1997-98. Brickey, who is on a three-game goal-scoring and five-game point streak, has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points, ranking second on the team in scoring.

How it Happened
- Ohio State appeared to open the scoring, but Penn State challenged for a hit before the goal and a major was assessed after review, taking the goal off the board as the clock was reset to the time of the penalty.
- The Nittany Lions converted on the major at 11:41 to take a 1-0 lead, scoring on a redirection in front.
- Just 41 seconds later, Buckeye Dalton Messina was able to force a turnover near the Ohio State blueline. He entered the zone on a 2-on-1 and his shot beat the goalie at 12:12 for his sixth goal of the year, and his third shorthanded score.
- Penn State regained the lead 80 seconds later on a goal from Tanner Palocsik from right in front.
- Shots were 11-4 in favor of Penn State in the first period.
- The Nittany Lions scored the only two goals of the second, at 2:51 and 10:50, for a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.
- The teams combined for 29 shots in the middle period, with Ohio State ahead 16-13.
