
No. 6 Ohio State Falls in Five Sets at Loyola Chicago

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6 Ohio State (8-3, 2-1) took a five-set loss to suffer its first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match at No. 13 Loyola Chicago (7-6, 2-1) at Gentile Arena in Chicago, Friday.
The Buckeyes lost by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 29-27, 14-25, 5-15.
Ohio State is 3-2 on the year in five-set matches.
Jacob Pasteur led the Buckeyes with 17 kills. Noah Platfoot had a match-high 46 assists. Defensively, Thomas Poole led with 11 digs.
How it Happened
Set 1
Ben Putnam got the Buckeyes out to a 3-0 start with a kill and ace around a Shane Wetzel kill. A Loyola Chicago error led to an early timeout by the Ramblers after a 4-0 start for the Buckeyes. Jacob Pasteur and Cole Young added kills to make it 6-1 Buckeyes. A 4-1 Ramblers run closed the gap to 7-5 Buckeyes. Pasteur added a kill and ace combination for a 9-5 lead. Loyola Chicago cut the lead to 9-8 before a Justin Howard kill put the Buckeyes back up by two. A Ramblers error and kills by Pasteur and Noah Platfoot capped a 3-0 run for a 16-12 Ohio State lead. A Wetzel solo block led to Loyola's final timeout of the set with the Buckeyes leading 19-14. Howard and Wetzel kills made it 21-15 Ohio State. A pair of Young kills led to match point at 24-17. Young then finished off the win for the Buckeyes with the final kill of the set for a 25-18 win. Ohio State hit .433 in the opener with the Ramblers connecting at a .130 clip. Pasteur and Young each had four kills.
Set 2
The Ramblers started with a 2-0 lead but the Buckeyes came back to tie it at 3-all on a Platfoot ace. Loyola responded with a 5-1 run to take an 8-4 advantage. The Buckeyes called timeout after the Ramblers took a 12-7 lead. Loyola kept up the pressure in building a 15-10 lead. Ohio State called its final timeout of the set after the Ramblers gained a 17-11 advantage. A Pasteur ace led to a Loyola timeout after the Buckeyes closed the gap to 17-13. The Buckeyes were not able to cut into the lead any further the rest of the way in a 25-20 loss to tie the match at 1-all. The Buckeyes hit .194 in the second while Loyola hit .471. Pasteur and Young were again tied for the team lead with seven total kills each.
Set 3
In similar fashion to the first set, Ohio State jumped to a quick 4-0 lead. A 3-1 Buckeyes run upped the advantage to 8-3 after a Howard kill. The Ramblers were not able to get closer than three before calling timeout with the Buckeyes leading 12-7. Loyola Chicago scored the next three after the timeout to make it 12-10 Buckeyes. Ohio State then called a timeout leading by two. The lead grew to four, 14-10, on a Pasteur kill. A Wetzel kill kept Ohio State's advantage at 18-15. The Ramblers scored the next four points to take a 19-18 lead. The Buckeyes called timeout and took the lead at 21-20 on a Pasteur kill. The Ramblers then used a 3-1 run for a 23-22 lead. Service errors by both teams put LUC up 24-23. Ohio State then tied it with a Howard kill to ensure overtime. A Pasteur kill put Ohio State back on top 25-24. Loyola called timeout and scored the next two for a 26-25 lead. Pasteur tied it again with a kill. The Buckeyes went up 28-27 on kills by Young and Pasteur before winning the set 29-27 on a Putnam ace. Ohio State hit .469 just ahead of Loyola's .455 percentage. Pasteur took the match lead with 14 kills.
Set 4
The Ramblers started out hot in taking a 7-2 lead before an Ohio State timeout. LUC built the lead to 11-4. The Buckeyes used a 4-1 run to make it 12-8 Ramblers. Loyola Chicago built the lead back to 17-10 before the Buckeyes called their final timeout of the set. Ohio State could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as the Ramblers tied the match up at 2-all with a 25-14 win. Pasteur upped his kill total for the match to 16 with Wetzel next at 12.
Set 5
The Ramblers again got going early with a 3-0 lead in the race to 15. Ohio State called timeout but the Ramblers scored the next two points for a 5-0 lead. The teams switched sides with Loyola Chicago leading 8-2. The Ramblers scored the next point forcing Ohio State's final timeout down 9-2. Loyola Chicago then finished off the match with a 15-x win for a 3-2 victory.
