Ohio State Wins Two Medals on Day Two of Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team won two medals on the second day of the Big Ten Championships on Thursday and has moved into third place.
Alex Axon won the first medal of the night for the Buckeyes, winning bronze in the 500 free with an NCAA B cut time of 4:13.90. Alex Metzler (4:15.78), Charlie Clark (4:16.62) and Sam Campbell (4:19.08) finished five-six-seven, respectively, in the A final. All three of their times are NCAA B cuts.
Tomas Navikonis finished third in the C final of the 500 free with a time of 4:22.07.
Lyle Yost was placed first in prelims and had a strong showing in the A final of the 1-meter dive. He won a bronze medal with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 399.20. Clayton Chaplin and Tyler Read finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1-meter A final. Chaplin had an aggregate score of 370.80 and Read had an overall score of 370.80. Both are NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
In the 1-meter B final, Jack Matthews placed fourth with a score of 333.85 and Kylie Flory placed seventh with a score of 311.45. Both are NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
Daniel Baltes earned a sixth-place finish in the A final of the 50 free, turning in an NCAA B cut time of 19.45. Evan Fentress finished third in the B final with an NCAA B standard time of 19.66. Also, in the B final, Mario McDonald placed seventh; he swam the event in an NCAA B cut time of 19.72.
Tristan Jankovics finished fourth in the B final of the 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:44.31, which is an NCAA B standard time.
In the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay, the team of Jankovics, Karl Helmuth, Chachi Gustafson and Baltes turned in a time of 3:08.05 to place seventh.
The Buckeyes moved up two spots from day one and sit in third place with 428 points.
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday through Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m. and finals are at 5:00 p.m. Tomorrow's events are the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter dive and the 200 free relay.
