COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 Ohio State men's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Virginia, 14-8, Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. The Buckeyes are now 4-1 on the year and the Cavaliers improve to 3-0.
The Short Story
Virginia took a 6-3 lead after the first quarter and led 10-3 at the half. Ohio State outscored the Cavaliers 3-1 in the third quarter and added two more scores in the fourth quarter but was not able to catch up to Virginia in the end.
Ohio State freshman goaltender Caleb Fyock made a career-high 17 saves in the game. The Buckeyes held Virginia to just four goals in the second half.
Ohio State grabbed 39 ground balls in the game, with Cullen Brown leading the way with game-high five on the day.
Ben Mayer led the Buckeyes with three points and two assists on attack. Alex Marinier scored the team's first two goals of the day for his third multi-goal performance of the season. Blake Eiland tallied the Buckeyes' third goal of the game for his first of the season.

How the Goals Were Scored
- Virginia took an early two-goal lead with goals from Connor Shellenberger and Will Inderlied to start the first quarter.
- Alex Marinier scored his first goal of day to bring the Buckeyes within one of the Cavaliers at 7:57 off a caused turnover by Marcus Hudgins. Cullen Brown grabbed the ground ball and ran it down the field before passing off to Marinier for the goal.
- Virginia scored four more goals in the first quarter before Mariner tallied his second of the game at 3:17. Blake Eiland scored a high bounce shot at 1:07 in the first for the final goal of the opening quarter.
- Virginia extended its lead with a four-goal second period.
- The Buckeyes struck first in the second half with a goal from Ed Shean at 11:12 in the third quarter. Shean capitalized off a fast break that started with a save from Caleb Fyock.
- After a Cavalier goal at 10:15, Ohio State's Kurt Bruun and Jack McKenna scored 50 seconds apart to bring the Buckeyes within five of Virginia at the end of the third quarter. Both Bruun and McKenna scored from right in front of the Cavalier's cage.
- UVA scored first in the fourth, but Dillon Magee responded three minutes later with the Buckeyes' seventh of the afternoon.
- Ohio State's final goal was scored by Ben Mayer with 1:01 to play in the game. He halted a two-goal Cavalier run to bring the Buckeyes to eight goals on the day.
