No. 15 Buckeyes Wrap December Slate vs. Notre Dame

Teams will meet Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena
The Basics
- The No. 15 Ohio State men's hockey team closes out its 2024 slate and a four-game homestand with two games vs. Notre Dame this weekend.Â
- The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus.
- The game Friday will be streamed through B1G+ and Saturday's contest will be televised by BTN. Ohio State Radio will carry the action (1460 AM, Ohio State Buckeyes app and website) and live stats will be available through OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
- Ohio State swept Penn State in Columbus last weekend and is 11-4-1 this year, with a 4-2-0 1-0-0 Big Ten ledger. Notre Dame, coming off an open weekend, is 6-10-0 overall this season and 1-7-0 1-1-0 in the B1G. The Irish last played Nov. 29-30 in the Friendship Four in Belfast, Ireland, where they defeated Harvard and lost to BU.
- Friday is the Buckeyes' annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used stuffed animal to throw on the ice during first intermission. All stuffed animals tossed on the ice will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio.
- Saturday there is a holiday ornament giveaway, with the first 300 fans in attendance receiving a Reindeer Brutus holiday ornament. Fans must enter through the northwest entrance of the Schottenstein Center to get their ornament, while supplies last.Â

- Â Â Â Parking is free for all men's hockey home games.
- Ohio State is 6-0-1 at home this season. The series vs. Penn State last weekend opened the home conference slate.Â
- Ohio State is No. 15 in the USCHO and USA Hockey/The Rink Live rankings this week, its eighth-consecutive week in the Top 20.
- The Buckeyes are in the Top 15 in the NCAA in scoring offense (3.31 goals per game), scoring defense (2.06 goals allowed per game) and scoring margin (+1.25).
- Goalie Kristoffer Eberly was named B1G Third Star of the Week after stopping 49-of-51 shots in the sweep of Penn State. He notched his second shutout of the season in game one with 22 saves. Eberly is in the Top 10 in the NCAA in goals-against average (1.44), save percentage (.941) and goalie winning percentage (.875).
- Graduate transfer Aiden Hansen-Bukata leads the Buckeyes with 14 assists on the year, ranking 10th in the NCAA in assists per game. He enters the series with 93 career points (10g, 83a).
- Graduate transfer Gunnarwolfe Fontaine hit the 100-point mark for his collegiate career earlier this season and now has 112 points, ranking fourth among active NCAA players. Â
- The Buckeyes will return to action when they take on Michigan in The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey series at Wrigley Field in Chicago Jan. 3. The Buckeyes and Wolverines will then meet in Ann Arbor, Mich., Jan. 5.
- Ohio State will then return to Columbus for a series vs. Minnesota. The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 and 6:30 p.m. Jan. 11.
- All-time, Notre Dame leads the series with Ohio State, 49-45-12 (according to the Buckeye record book), with the first game Feb. 13, 1965.Â
- In Columbus, Ohio State has the edge, 24-22-7, and the Irish are ahead in Big Ten regular season games, 16-10-2.Â
- Last year, the teams met in South Bend Nov. 10-11, 2023, with Notre Dame posting 4-1 and 3-0 victories. In Columbus Jan. 12-13, the series was split, with a 3-2 Buckeye win and 5-2 Irish victory.
- Ohio State and Notre Dame skated as members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association until 2012-13 when the league was disbanded. Ohio State was a founding member of the conference in 1971-72 and played for two years before leaving for three seasons (1973-74, `74-75, `75-76) and skating as an independent. Ohio State then rejoined the CCHA for the 1975-1976 campaign and remained until 2013. The Irish were in the league in 1981-82 and `82-83 and then rejoined in 1992-93. The Buckeyes and Irish last met as CCHA foes March 23, 2013 in the CCHA Tournament semifinals, a 3-1 ND win at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
- Notre Dame associate head coach Paul Pooley is the Buckeyes' all-time leading scorer and his number 22 hangs in Value City Arena as the only Ohio State men's hockey player with his number retired.Â
- Ohio State split a series at home vs. Notre Dame Jan. 12-13, taking the opener 3-2 before a 5-2 loss.Â
- In the first game, Dalton Messina scored for the Buckeyes late in the first for a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Stephen Halliday doubled the Buckeye lead with a goal halfway through the second period. The Irish got on the board 65 seconds into the third and tied the game at 9:33. Ohio State took advantage of its first power play chance since the first period, as Scooter Brickey broke the tie at 11:32. Notre Dame skated with its net empty for the last 2:05 but the Buckeye defense held strong, including facing a 6-on-4 advantage after an Ohio State penalty with 10.2 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes outshot the Irish, 37-28, in the game.Â
- In game two, Notre Dame scored twice in less than two minutes for a 2-0 lead at the 11:42 mark of the first period. Max Montes finished a 2-on-0 play with Joe Dunlap at 17:07 to put Ohio State on the board and with 50 seconds left in the period Stephen Halliday deadlocked the score. The Irish broke the tie at 13:08 of the second and followed with a power play goal less than three minutes later at 15:42 for a 4-2 advantage. The only goal of the third came from Notre Dame for the 5-2 final. For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 43-32.
