Makenna Webster and Katie Fichtner are first-team all-conference honorees
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five members of the Ohio State field hockey team were honored with Big Ten postseason awards on Wednesday, the conference office announced.
Makenna Webster and Katie Fichtner were first team All-Big Ten honorees, Anne Marie Krebs earned second team All-Big Ten accolades and Cam Standish made the conference's All-Freshman Team. Additionally, senior Cameryn Forgash is Ohio State's Sportsmanship Honoree.
The Buckeyes' awards come on the eve of the Big Ten Tournament, which gets underway tomorrow in College Park, Md. on the campus of the University of Maryland. The Buckeyes (14-4, 4-4 Big Ten) are the No. 5 seed and will take on fourth-seeded Rutgers (7-8, 4-4 Big Ten) at 11 a.m. Thursday. A win would put Ohio State into the semifinals on Friday against top-seeded Northwestern (18-0, 8-0 Big Ten) at 1 p.m.
Webster, a graduate student from St. Louis and team captain, was a unanimous first team selection and finished the regular season third in the conference in points (40), goals (15) and assists (10). She scored at least one goal in 11 of Ohio State's 18 regular season games (the Buckeyes were 10-1 in those contests) and against Big Ten opponents, Webster totaled 11 points on five goals and an assist.
On Sunday, in Ohio State's regular season finale against Central Michigan, Webster notched her 100th career points. She enters this weekend's Big Ten Tournament with 102 points in 57 career games. She's just the 10th player in program history to be named first team All-Big Ten in multiple seasons.
Fichtner, a junior back from Harwood, Md. who is also a team captain, earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. As a defender, she was integral in Ohio State notching six shutouts during the regular season. Offensively, she was the team's second leading scorer with 16 points (seven goals, two assists). Nearly half of those 16 points came against Big Ten opponents when she scored goals against Michigan State, Maryland and Indiana.
Krebs, a sophomore, played in and started all 18 games this season and is currently tied for third on the team with three assists. A Louisville, Ky. native, Krebs' play in the midfield helped fuel an Ohio State offense that ranks in the top 10 nationally in scoring average (eighth – 3.00), goals per game (ninth – 3.06) and scoring margin (sixth – 2.02). The Buckeyes' scored four or more goals in nine of their 18 regular season games.
Standish is a redshirt freshman who, like Krebs, played a key role in generating Ohio State's offense from the midfield. She started all 18 games and scored two goals, each of which came in Buckeye wins: one vs. Bucknell and one last Sunday vs. Central Michigan.
Forgash was an 18-game starter this season as a midfielder and is one of four players on the roster who has played in 70 or more career games. She scored three goals and added three assists this season to finish sixth on the team in scoring and had multi-point games in wins over Colgate (one goal, one assist) and Central Michigan (one goal, one assist).
