Mosley, Santos and Von Scherr earn women’s all-region honors
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's and women's cross country teams ran in the 2024 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Friday at Silver Creek Metro Park in Norton, Ohio. The women, led by Top 25 finishes from Aniya Mosley, Daniella Santos and Akemi Von Scherr, placed fifth, while the men were eighth, highlighted by freshman Weston Day.
A Trio of All-Region Buckeyes
Aniya Mosley, Daniella Santos and Akemi Von Scherr earned All-Great Lakes Region honors, which are awarded to the Top 25 finishers in each region by the USTFCCCA. Mosley placed eighth, Santos was 11th and Von Scherr was 24th.
For Santos, this is her third consecutive all-region honor. She is the third Buckeye to earn three All-Great Lakes Region accolades, joining Michelle Thomas (2012-14) and Addie Engel (2021-23). Ohio State has compiled 22 all-region honors since 2011 and this is the fourth time in school history three Buckeyes have earned all-region honors in the same season (2009, 2019, 2022).
Quoting head coach Sara Mason Vergote
"The women had a great day. To have three women be All-Region is tremendous. Aniya and Daniella will make the national meet as individuals and Akemi ran her best cross country race ever.
"I couldn't be prouder of our men. That's the best regional finish we've had in a very long time. Every guy on the team has been locked in this whole season, so to improve to eighth from 15th a year ago is something to celebrate. I'm especially pleased with Weston, who is a true freshman, and Liam, who came up big for us today."
The Buckeye Women in the 6K
Ohio State placed fifth as a team with 156 points, the third straight regional finish in the Top 5.
Mosley, coming off an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, was eighth in the regional meet in a time of 19:47.7. Daniella Santos was 11th, her third Top 12 finish at regionals after placing seventh the last two years. Akemi Von Scherr finished 24th, just off her personal best time set at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago.
Katie Castelli was fourth for the Buckeyes and 46th overall and Teodora Iovi finished 67th to close out the Buckeye counters. Zoee Lehman (87th) and Sydney Paul (109th) wrapped up the Buckeye women in the race. Castelli, Iovi and Lehman all ran personal best times for the 6K.
The Buckeye Men in the 10K
As a team, the men were eighth with 214 points, one back of seventh place. It was the first time in the Top 10 since 2019 and the highest team finish since placing seventh in 2016.
