Buckeyes will look to bounce back against No. 1 Northwestern on Friday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3-ranked Ohio State field hockey team finished its weekend 1-1 as the Buckeyes fell to No. 16 Iowa on Sunday by a 3-0 final. With today's loss, Ohio State is 13-3 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten. Iowa improved to 9-7 and 2-5 in conference play.
Key Quotes
On today's game: "Iowa is always a really good defensive team. They have some good upperclassman that really help them play as a unit," head coach Jarred Martin said. "We just had a few too many skill breakdowns."
On Friday's matchup against No. 1-ranked Northwestern: "We just have to keep working on ourselves, keep building on things we do every week. From a fitness standpoint, we need to be sharp, because they're fast like we are," Martin said. "We play Northwestern every year, so we know going in we have to be our best. I feel like you join the Big Ten for field hockey because you expect that."
How it Happened
The first quarter was scoreless, with Ohio State and Iowa only combining for three shots and the Hawkeyes recording the only penalty corner in the first 15. Despite both squads generating four total penalty corners in the second quarter, neither could find the back of the cage, and the scoring stalemate continued into halftime.
The Hawkeyes opened up scoring in the third quarter, finding the open goal after stealing the ball in the backfield to take a 1-0 lead. Iowa scored again in the 40th minute on a penalty corner opportunity to lift its lead to 2-0. The Buckeyes pulled their goalie in the fourth, and Iowa struck again with 59 seconds left in the match to take the score to 3-0.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Iowa's Alex Wesneski put the Hawkeyes on the board at the 34:20 mark after forcing a turnover in the scoring circle. It was her third goal of the season.
- Sophomore Lieve van Kessel notched her fifth goal of the season in the 40th minute, finding the back of the cage after a save by Ohio State's Abby Danson.
- Dionne van Aalsum found the goal for the Hawkeyes with less than a minute left in the game thanks to an assist by Rachel Herbine. Van Aalsum totals nine goals on the year.
Buckeye This and That
- Today's loss is the first for the Buckeyes this season at home. Ohio State is 8-1 this season on their home turf, the most wins in Columbus since the 2009 season.
- Iowa's three goals are the most Ohio State has allowed its opponents since September 29 when the Buckeyes topped then-No. 13 Louisville 4-3 in overtime. Ohio State has still outscored the competition 48-15 in 2024.
- Goalkeeper Abby Danson made her 74th career start in today's game, good enough tie for 14th in program history. Danson has started in all but three matches in her career as a Buckeye.
- This is the first game that the Buckeyes have lost when outshooting their opponents. Ohio State still holds a 239-138 advantage in shots this season.
- Two of Ohio State's three losses have been to ranked opponents: then-No. 6 Michigan and today against the No. 16 Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes are still set to face No. 1 Northwestern on Friday.
