Sophomore won ITA Midwest Regional Championship singles title
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- After winning the ITA Midwest Regional singles title, Buckeye sophomore Luciana Perry has been selected the Big Ten co-Player of the Week.Â
In the tournament, Perry, the No. 2 seed who is ranked 23rd, won six straight matches, dropping just two sets combined. As a singles finalist, she also secured a berth into this fall's NCAA singles championship. The title is the first regional singles championship in program history and the third regional crown.Â
Perry won her Round of 64 and Round of 32 matches in straight sets and then posted a three-set win in the Round of 16. After a quarterfinal victory in two sets, Perry rallied for a three-set win in the semifinals against Michigan's No. 55-ranked Piper Charney, 3-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5. In the final, Perry defeated No. 1 seed and No. 12 ranked Julia Fliegner, 6-1, 6-1.
The Export, Pa., native is coming off a freshman season that saw her earn All-America and ITA National Rookie of the Year accolades. She was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and named to the All-Big Ten team.Â
