Sophomore claims program's first regional singles title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Luciana Perry, a sophomore on the Ohio State women's tennis team, captured the ITA Midwest Regional Championships singles title Tuesday in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. In the tournament, Perry, the No. 2 seed who is ranked 23rd, won six straight matches, dropping just two sets combined. As a singles finalist, she also secured a berth into this fall's NCAA singles championship.
Â
The championship is the first regional singles title in program history and the third regional title. Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford (2016) and Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff (2022) were regional doubles winners.
Â
Perry won her Round of 64 and Round of 32 matches in straight sets and then posted a three-set win (6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1) in the Round of 16. After a quarterfinal victory in two sets, Perry rallied for a three-set win in the semifinals. In the semis against Michigan's No. 55-ranked Piper Charney, Perry dropped the first set, 3-6. A rain delay followed and after play resumed, Perry went on to even the match with a tiebreaker victory. In the third set, Perry was up a break early but Charney got back on serve at five-all. Perry responded with a break of her own and then served it out.
Â
In the final, Perry defeated No. 1 seed and No. 12 ranked Julia Fliegner, 6-1, 6-1. Perry, the No. 2 seed, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Fleigner broke to get on the board but Perry answered with a break and served it out. In the second set, Perry opened with a break and a hold, with both on the no-ad point. The Wolverine won the next game on the 40-40 point but Perry did not drop a game the rest of the way. She held at love for a 3-1 lead and broke for 4-1, taking the final two games on the no-ad point.
Â
Spencer Reaches Singles Semifinals
Sophomore Audrey Spencer had an outstanding run in the regional championships, as she won five matches in a row to reach the semifinals. Through her first four matches, the only set Spencer dropped was in the Round of 16 against No. 44-ranked Maria Sholokhova of Wisconsin, who won the ITA All-American Championships last month. Spencer was shut out in the first set but won the next two 6-3 to advance.
Â
Against top-seeded and No. 12-ranked Julia Fliegner in the semifinals, Spencer dropped the first set, 6-1. In a back-and-forth second set, she eventuall lost in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
Â
Spencer was slated to play in the 3 vs. 4 playoff match Tuesday but Michigan's Piper Charney withdrew with an injury, giving Spencer the walkover.
Â
Buckeyes in the ITA Midwest Regional
The tournament opened with a 64-player prequalifying round, with Alessia Cau and Nao Nishino both winning two matches to earn a spot in the main draw.
Â
Cau and Nishino joined six other Buckeyes in the main draw. Six Buckeyes posted first round wins – Cau, Audrey Spencer, Sydni Ratliff, Nishino, Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry.
Â
Spencer, Perry and Chavez all won their next two matches to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Perry defeated Chavez in straight sets and Spencer won her match in two sets. The semifinals saw Perry advance in three sets, while Spencer lost in two, and Perry closed out the tournament as the champion.
