COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4/5 Ohio State women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against No. 2 Minnesota Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes (5-2-1, 3-2-1 WCHA) went on to win the shootout to earn five of six points in the series against the Gophers (4-1-1, 0-1-1 WCHA).
How it Happened
- Ohio State was first on the board again with freshman Jordyn Petrie scoring at 4:08 in the first period. The Gophers had the puck behind their net, but their attempt to clear the zone was stopped by the Buckeyes. Sloane Matthews took a shot from the left side of the net that was saved by Minnesota netminder Hannah Clark, and that led to a flurry of shots and rebounds in the goalie crease. Eventually Petrie got her stick on the loose puck to put the Buckeyes up, 1-0.
- The game was scoreless for nearly 40 minutes after the Buckeyes' goal. Ohio State killed off a five-minute major penalty towards the end of the first period to keep the 1-0 lead at the first intermission and killed off the Gopher's second power play opportunity to start the second period.
- Ohio State goaltender made 18 saves in the first two periods to keep Minnesota off the board. Kiara Zanon made a save herself, laying her stick across the goal line halfway through the second frame to help hold the Gophers scoreless
- Minnesota's Josefin Bouveng tied the game at 3:54 in the third period to even the score at 1-1.
- Neither team was able to net the game-winning goal, sending the game to 3-on-3 overtime.
- After five minutes of extra time, the score remained even at one, officially making the result a tie. The teams went on to a best-of-3 shootout to determine who would get the extra conference point.
- Ohio State elected to shoot second in the shootout. Thiele stopped the Gophers' first shooter, Ella Huber, and sophomore Joy Dunne scored on the Buckeyes' first shot.
- Minnesota's Abbey Murphy scored in the third round to force extra rounds of the shootout. Thiele went on to make three more saves and sophomore Jocelyn Amos netted her sixth-round shot to give the Buckeyes the shootout win.
- Ohio State has played two overtime games this season and is 1-0-1 in those contests.
- The Buckeyes are 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings against the Gophers.
- Petrie is now tied with Amos and Jenna Buglioni with five goals on the year.
- Thiele made a season-best 28 saves in the game. She is now 3-1-1 in net for Ohio State this season.
