
Buckeyes Find Success at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

Perry and Spencer both reached singles semifinals
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State women's tennis team hosted the 2024 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday through Tuesday at the Auer Tennis Complex and Ty Tucker Tennis Center. The individual tournament included a 64-player qualifying singles draw, followed by a 64-player singles main draw and 64-team doubles main draw, along with consolationmatches.Â
Buckeye Luciana Perry was the singles champion, capturing the first regional singles title in program history and earning a berth in the NCAA Singles Championship. Audrey Spencer reached the singles semifinal with five straight wins.Â

Singles (Tuesday)
With a dominant 6-1, 6-1, win, Luciana Perry earned the Midwest Regional singles title, defeating Michigan's Julia Fliegner. It is the first singles title in Buckeye history. Perry, the No. 2 seed, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Fleigner broked to get on the board but Perry answered with a break and served it out. In the second set, Perry opened with a break and a hold, with both on the no-ad point. The Wolverine won the next game on the 40-40 point but Perry did not drop a game the rest of the way. She held at love for a 3-1 lead and broke for 4-1. She took the final two games on the no-ad point.Â
Audrey Spencer was slated to play in the 3/4 playoff match Tuesday but Michigan's Piper Charney withdrew with an injury, giving Spencer the walkover.Â
Singles (Monday)
Luciana Perry earned a spot in the regional final and clinched a berth in the NCAA Championships with a three-set win over Michigan's Piper Charney in the semifinals. Perry lost the first set 6-3. The
match was then delayed because of a rain shower that made the courts unplayable. After an hour-plus, they returned to the courts. Perry took the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (11). In the third set, an early tiebreak for Perry held for much of the match, but Charney got back on serve at 5-all. Perry answered with a break and then served it out, 7-5.Â
In the other semifinal, Audrey Spencer dropped the first set, 6-1, against top seed Julia Fliegner. The players battled in the second, with the Wolverine prevailing in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6).
Singles and Doubles (Sunday)
Two Buckeyes advanced to the semifinals in singles. Luciana Perry won a matchup of Buckeyes in one quarterfinal, as she defeated Teah Chavez, 6-4, 6-1. Audrey Spencer's run continued with a straight-set win over Ava Schaefbauer of Illinois.Â
The tandem of Dani Schoenly and Sydni Ratliff picked up a win in doubles third round action, 8-6, over a duo from Illinois before falling to a Michigan team in the quarterfinals, 8-5. The duos of Perry/Spencer and Shelly Bereznyak/Nao Nishino both suffered losses in the Round of 16.Â
The Buckeyes played a number of extra matches, with Ratliff, Bereznyak, Schoenly and Megan Basil all posting wins.

Ohio State has three of the singles quarterfinalists, as Audrey Spencer, Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry all won two matches Saturday to advance. Sydni Ratliff won her second round match before falling in a close match in the Round of 16. In the second round, Nao Nishino dropped her second round match in a third set tiebreaker and Alessia Cau fell in two sets.Â
Three of four Buckeye doubles teams won Saturday to move to the third round. Perry/Spencer, Dani Schoenly/Ratliff and Shelly Bereznyak/Nishino were all victorious, while Chavez/Cau lost in a tiebreaker.
In consolation and exhibition matches, Bereznyak, Schoenly and Megan Basil each posted a win. Â
