Will represent the United States in the 10-meter air pistol
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Katelyn Abeln, a graduate student from Douglasville, Ga., punched her ticket for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games over the weekend with her performance at the USA Shooting's Olympic Trials. Abeln earned a spot in the 10-meter women's air pistol event.
Abeln's road to Paris has included five competitions and three rounds of finals over the last three months. She ended up tying for second place this weekend in 10-meter women's air pistol and won the spot on the team based on having more center shots.
In order for USA Shooting to qualify for competition in an event at the Olympic games, an athlete must win a quota slot in the event. For Paris, USA Shooting has five out of the eight possible quotas for air gun. This past weekend, USA Shooting named Olympic team members in women's air pistol, women's air rifle and men's air rifle.
USA Shooting athletes will be competing in the 2024 Championship of the Americas Games this spring in the hopes of earning the remaining quotas needed for the Paris Games. USA Shooting athletes currently have a total of 18 Olympic quotas slots for Pairs and four Paralympic quotas.
Abeln, who has already graduated with her degree in public health, has helped the pistol team win three consecutive national championships. Last March, she took first place in the three-event aggregate and air pistol events in addition to being an All-American.
