Buckeyes Beat Boilermakers 71-68 on Sunday Afternoon

Ohio State improved to 8-1 in conference play with the win.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 12/12 Ohio State Buckeyes (17-3, 8-1 B1G) beat Purdue (9-11, 2-7 B1G) by a 71-68 margin on Sunday afternoon in the teams only meeting of the regular season.
Ohio State scored the first seven points of the game, but Purdue chipped into the Buckeyes' lead as OSU was up 20-19 after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes held the Boilermakers to only eight points in the second quarter to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room. Purdue took its first lead of the game by scoring the first seven points of the third quarter but Ohio State rallied to take a 53-46 lead into the final quarter. The Boilermakers got close down the stretch but the Buckeyes made free throws to secure the win.
Rebeka Mikulášiková was the first Buckeye to reach double figures and finished with 15 points. Cotie McMahon finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight assists in her third consecutive game with a double-double. Taylor Thierry scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
How it Happened
Ohio State scored the first seven points of the game in less than 1:30 and held a 12-6 lead midway through the quarter after a three-point play from Rebeka Mikulášiková. The Boilermakers tied the game at 17 with less than a minute to play in the quarter using a 7-2 run. OSU held the 20-19 advantage after 10 minutes.
Harris opened the second quarter with her second triple before Purdue answered with a three-pointer. Mikulášiková scored the next four points to give the Buckeyes a 27-22 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Emma Shumate scored five unanswered points and Taiyier Parks wrapped the half's scoring at the free throw line as the Buckeyes led 33-27.
Purdue scored the first seven points of the quarter to take its first lead of the game at 34-33 amidst a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State scored the next four points to regain the lead, but Purdue tied the game at 39 with 5:49 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeyes went on a 7-0 run after being tied at 41 and Jacy Sheldon made a shot from the logo to send OSU into the fourth quarter with a 53-46 lead.
McMahon opened the fourth quarter with a layup before back-to-back scores from Purdue. A 5-0 Buckeye run extended Ohio State's lead to 65-57 with 4:36 remaining. The Boilermakers made four-consecutive free throws to cut the Buckeyes' lead to 67-65 with 21 seconds to play. Ohio State led 71-65 with 10 seconds to play before a Purdue three-pointer cut the lead in half. The final score was 71-68 after that triple.
