Ohio State’s Historic Third Quarter Lifts Buckeyes Past Badgers

The Buckeyes scored the most third quarter points in program history in an 87-49 win on Thursday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8/7 Ohio State Buckeyes (18-3, 9-1 B1G) beat Wisconsin (10-10, 3-7 B1G) on Thursday evening by an 87-49 margin in the pink game.
The first quarter saw six ties and four lead changes as Wisconsin had the 16-15 edge after 10 minutes. Ohio State used a 7-0 run in the second quarter to take a 31-26 lead into halftime. The Buckeyes scored the most third-quarter points in program history to win the quarter 39-11 and extend the lead to 70-37 after 30 minutes. Ohio State had the 87-49 advantage at the final buzzer.
Cotie McMahon was the first Buckeye to reach double figures and finished with 15 points. McMahon added 10 rebounds for her fourth-consecutive double-double. Celeste Taylor (10), Jacy Sheldon (17) and Eboni Walker (11) also scored in double figures. Walker tied her season-highs in points (11) and rebounds (7).
How it Happened
Wisconsin opened scoring with a three-pointer on the opening possession before McMahon scored the next five points on the floor. The teams traded scoring and Ohio State held an 11-9 lead at the media timeout. The Badgers took a 12-9 lead out of the timeout with a three-point play and led 16-15 after 10 minutes.
Both offenses started slowly in the second quarter as the score was tied at 16 with seven minutes to play before halftime. Ohio State used a 7-0 run in the span of a minute to take a 23-19 lead. Wisconsin got as close as one at 25-24 before the Buckeyes went on a 6-2 run to end the half with a 31-26 lead.
The Buckeyes scored the first seven points of the third quarter to increase their lead to 38-26 with 8:44 remaining in the quarter and forced a Badgers timeout. OSU used an extended 19-2 run through the first four minutes of the third quarter to build a 50-28 lead. Ohio State had a second 12-0 and led 70-37 after 30 minutes.
Ohio State used an 8-0 run over three minutes to extend the lead to 80-41 midway through the quarter. Scoring alternated and then ended with Wisconsin free throws as the Buckeyes earned the 87-49 win.
