Ohio State outshot the Cardinals 15-3 and had a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite outshooting No. 5 Louisville 15-3 and holding a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners, No. 18 Ohio State suffered its first loss of the season on Friday evening as it was delt a 2-1 setback. The Buckeyes are 5-1 on the season while Louisville improves to 5-0.
The Short Story
Ohio State had a 15-2 edge in shots over the final three quarters and generated seven second-half corner opportunities but could never find the equalizer against Louisville's defense.
Aimee Plumb scored both of Louisville's goals while Jule Rodijk and Sarah Richards combined to convert a penalty corner in the third quarter for the Buckeyes' lone score. Goalie Merlijn van der Vegt of Louisville, who entered the game having allowed just four total goals in four games, made six saves.
How The Goals Were Scored
- The only official shot in the boxscore that came in the first quarter found the back of the cage. That was courtesy of Louisville's Aimee Plumb, who converted on a penalty stroke opportunity with just under three minutes remaining in the opening 15 minutes.
- That's the way the score stayed through halftime, but Plumb would extended Louisville's lead to 2-0 early in the second quarter when she scored off a cross from Roosje Neve.
- Graduate student Julie Rodijk made good on a penalty corner opportunity for Ohio State before the third quarter expired to cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1. The goal was assisted by Sarah Richards. It was also Rodijk's third score of the season.
Buckeye This and That
- After both teams combined to produce just one first-quarter shot, Ohio State had the better of play in the second quarter.
- The Buckeyes outshot Louisville 7-0 in the second and generated two penalty corners. As time expired before halftime, Sarah Richard's potential game-tying goal was saved by Louisville defender Sofia Pendolino.
- Louisville goalie Merlijn van der Vegt made four saves in the quarter to keep the scarlet and gray off the scoreboard.
- A potential game-tying goal by Leanne Bough hit the post with 8:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.
- Friday's game was a homecoming for two Louisville natives on Ohio State's roster. Claudia Thomas, a junior, and Anne Marie Krebs, a freshman, both played at Christian Academy of Louisville.
- Each of the last seven meetings between Ohio State and Louisville have been decided by one goal. In 2021, the two teams played to a 2-1 final in Columbus that was decided in double overtime. The Cardinals won that game on a Julie Kouijzer goal.
