Buckeyes Begin Campaign with OSU Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State fencing program began its year with the OSU Open Saturday in French Field House. Five Buckeyes – Lucy Whittemore, Katherine Larimer, Lorenzo Mion, Matthew Bülau and Luca Fioretto – won event titles. In all, 28 Buckeyes recorded a Top 8 finish.
The weekend wraps up with the OSU Duals Sunday in French Field House. Fencing starts at 8:30 a.m. and a full schedule is online HERE. The event will be in French Field House, with free admission and free parking on the south side of the facility.
RESULTS
Women's Foil
In women's foil, Alina Lee and Claire Teresa Galavotti both reached the semifinals. Lee dominated in her semifinal, 15-4, before falling in the final to take silver. Freshmen Raiyan Moradi-Bidhendi and Sydney Brush both ended the tournament in the Top 8.

Women's Epee
Buckeyes took three of four spots in the women's epee semifinals. Lucy Whittemore prevailed, 15-14, over the one seed in her semifinal. In a matchup of Buckeyes, Sally Fan defeated Julia Semikin, 15-9, to advance to the final. Whittemore was a 15-12 winner in the final. Talie Weiss placed fifth, as she fell to Whittemore in the quarterfinals.

Women's Saber
The women's saber final was all-Buckeye, with Katherine Larimer defeating Maria Alexe, 15-9, in the championship. Larimer won her semifinal match 15-4, while Alexe advanced with a 15-10 win. Hamsika Arnipalli was seventh in the final standings after reaching the Table of 8.

Men's Epee
It was an all-Buckeye matchup in the men's epee final, with Matthew Bülau prevailing against Gabriel Feinberg, 15-9. Buelau defeated teammate Miles Weiss 15-12 in the semifinals and Feinberg advanced after defeating Buckeye alum Joseph Guinan, 15-8.
Ayush Shah, Nowell Gibson and Clark Kokenge all notched Top 8 finishes.

The men's saber semifinals featured an all-Buckeye lineup. Luca Fioretto topped Avin Rai in the semifinals, 15-7, and Aaron Buergenthal was a 15-8 winner over Kelly Liu in the other semi. Fioretto, a freshman in his first collegiate event, topped Buergenthal 15-10 to take gold.

In all, eight of the Top 9 finishers were from Ohio State. Solin Li was fifth, Ilya Ayupov was sixth and Isaac Ariza followed in seventh, with Justin Vogler eighth and Edriss Ndiaye ninth.
