No. 14 Ohio State Sweeps ETSU to Wrap Up NKU Tournament

The Buckeyes earned their second sweep of the weekend to improve to 3-0 following opening weekend.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0) earned the sweep (25-15, 25-13, 25-19) against East Tennessee State (0-3) in a Sunday matinee to wrap up competition at the NKU Tournament.
Ohio State built a comfortable lead early in the first set, allowing ETSU to get no closer than five and capturing a 25-15 set win. After surrendering the opening point, the Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead in the second set and never looked back to earn the convincing 25-13 set win. OSU overcame a strong ETSU start in the third set and a late push to earn the sweep with a 25-19 set win.
Emily Londot led the Buckeye offense with 12 kills, while Eloise Brandewie had her best offensive showing of the season with nine kills and Zaria Ragler totaled five kills in her collegiate debut. Sydney Taylor recorded double-figure digs for the second-consecutive match, finishing with 10 digs. Mia Tuman (24 assists) and Kamiah Gibson (16 assists) split setting duties.
How it Happened
Chelsea Thorpe opened the match with a kill as Ohio State scored the first two points. The Buckeyes used runs of five and three to build a comfortable 12-4 lead and held the 15-8 advantage at the media timeout. Ohio State responded to a 3-0 ETSU run with three unanswered points of its own and put together a 6-1 run to force a Bucs timeout as the Buckeyes led 23-13. Ohio State took the first set by a 25-15 margin.
ETSU scored first in the second set before OSU scored five of the next six points to take a 5-2 lead. After East Tennessee State got within one at 6-5, Ohio State put together a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 12-5. The Buckeyes led by the same 15-8 margin at the media timeout. Four-straight OSU kills stretched the lead to 19-9, forcing an ETSU timeout. Kamiah Gibson capped a 25-13 set win with a service ace.
East Tennessee State scored first in the third set and forced an OSU timeout by taking an early 7-5 lead. ETSU led by as much as 8-5 before OSU tied the set at 10. The Buckeyes used three-straight kills to take a 13-12 lead, Ohio State's first lead of the set, and pushed it to 15-12 by extending the run to 5-0. Another pair of Buckeye runs pushed the lead to 24-16 and Ohio State closed out the sweep with a 25-19 set win.

The Buckeyes host No. 20 Georgia Tech in back-to-back matches on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. to begin the 2023 home schedule. Both matches will be broadcast live on B1G+.

- OSU hit a weekend-best .467 as a team with five individuals hitting .500 or above and had at least five different individuals record a kill in each set.
- Emily Londot led the offense again with 12 kills. She hit 5-of-8 without an error (.625) in the first set alone and remained without errors through two sets, finishing with just one error for a .524 hitting percentage.
- Londot now totals 1,229 career kills, moving her into the 15th spot in the program's record book. She also moved up to 15th in career block assists (261).
