COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State got first half goals from sophomore Dakota Lyons and freshman Amanda Schlueter, but Montana would get the second-half equalizer and the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Buckeyes are now 1-2-1 on the season while Montana is 3-0-1. The match was played in front of a South Campus Stadium record 1,973 people, a mark that surpassed the previous record by nearly 900 fans.
How it Happened
Montana got on the board first as a tough-luck handball in the box led to a penalty kick in the ninth minute. The Grizzlies converted and would lead early.
Back-to-back Buckeye goals just past the midway point of the opening half put Ohio State in front 2-1. The first came off the right foot of sophomore Dakota Lyons in the 26th minute. She took a ball from outside the box and rifled a shot from the left corner of the box and it got through everyone. That was the first goal of her career.
Just under four minutes later, freshman Amanda Schlueter collected her first collegiate goal as her right-footed shot from the top of the box was perfected place in the lower left corner of the goal and the Buckeyes led 2-1. Fellow freshman Berkley Mape assisted on the goal for her first collegiate point.
The score was fitting for the first 45 minutes as the Buckeyes dominated possession throughout the majority of the half. After the opening push from Montana, the Grizzlies never really had a scoring threat for the next 35 minutes.
In the second half, Montana got an own goal off another unfortunate deflection in the 59th minute and that was all the scoring as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Up Next
Ohio State returns home this week to host Oakland on Thursday evening. This will be the third meeting between the two programs. First touch is set for 5 p.m. from Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
